As expected, Darren McCarty has signed the one-year contract he was offered by the Red Wings.
Financial terms were not announced. McCarty, who is playing for the Wings' minor-league affiliate in Grand Rapids, "has earned this opportunity," general manager Ken Holland said.
"He's made great strides in the past several months and we wanted to give him the chance to continue in hopes he can contribute to the Red Wings once again."
McCarty, 35, has seven points in nine games with the Grand Rapids Griffins.
Signing the contract makes McCarty eligible to play for the Wings at any time, including the playoffs.
This doesn't mean that he will be on the team. It just gives him the opportunity to be if they decide to call him up. Personally, I feel that he's washed up, but whatever.

I have a friend that lives in GR... They said his first game back (the one where he scored a hatrick) he was head and shoulders above everyone else on the ice... That said... The Griffin's are a minor league team, but at least his heart is in it and he's making a real effort to come back... This isn't just us handing out some charity to a former player, his interest and dedication towards coming back is very real.... Hopefully it works out, but if not it won't break my heart... Anything to make the team better though...

My question is this: What happened to him to begin with? Why wasn't he signed with someone? Did he get hurt or something?

It's my understanding that McCarty got himself in some trouble with the local casinos and alcohol. I guess he owes a bunch of money to the casinos and may have a drinking problem. Again, this is just what I heard, I can't confirm or deny it. Has anyone else heard anything about this?
