Wings, Hasek finally agree

Goalie gets a deal worth more than $2 million for one year, could grow to $4 million with bonuses.

DETROIT -- The Red Wings have finally locked Dominik Hasek in for another season.

The Hall of Fame-bound goalie and the Wings tentatively agreed to a one-year contract Thursday which will pay him slightly more than $2 million with bonuses that could make the deal worth $4 million.

An official announcement from the Wings is expected today.

"Nothing is signed yet, and Dom's agent, Ritch Winter, will be talking with him one more time, but it's my feeling we're either done or very, very close to a deal," general manager Ken Holland said.

Winter indicated a deal had been reached when contacted earlier in the evening.

"We've settled, it's all done," Winter said.

"Dominik wanted to give the team room to have maneuverability under the salary cap. We've been able to do that."

Hasek, 42, told the team in mid-June he would be returning for one more season, beginning several weeks of negotiations between Holland and Winter.

After re-signing forward Jiri Hudler earlier in the day, the Wings have one forward and possibly one defenseman spot available, with approximately $4 million to $5 million left under the cap.

Hasek earned $750,000 last season. He was 38-11-6 with a 2.05 goals-against average, .913 save percentage and eight shutouts. Hasek was 10-8 in the playoffs with a 1.79 GAA, .923 save percentage and two shutouts.
