Pistons sign second-round draft picks Johnson, Acker

August 12, 2005

The Pistons signed second-round draft picks Amir Johnson and Alex Acker to their rookie contracts Thursday.

Terms of the deals were not disclosed, and Johnson's agent did not return a call for comment. Acker has no agent listed with the NBA players association.

Pistons president of basketball operations Joe Dumars and vice president of basketball operations John Hammond have said this summer that Johnson, the 56th overall pick, and Acker, the 60th pick, have a shot at making the Pistons' roster in training camp.

Johnson, a 6-foot-9 forward from Los Angeles Westchester, was the 2005 Mr. Basketball in California and is just the second Piston to be drafted straight out of high school. Korleone Young, drafted in 1998, was the first.

Acker, a 6-5 guard, averaged 14.5 points in a four-year career at Pepperdine.

Both took part in the Pistons' summer league in Las Vegas last month. Johnson averaged 8.8 points, while Acker was second on the team with 14.4 points.

Hammond spoke highly of both after summer league, but especially of Acker.

"We felt like this is a guy who was probably our most consistent player," Hammond said. "He's a guy that knows how to play, and he plays within himself."

Post Does this mean Johnson and Acker are making the team?
Does signing the 2nd round picks solidify that they've made the roster? Any chance of sending either player down to the NBDL? If not, the Pistons only have room for 1 FA pickup this offseason (assuming Lindsay Hunter returns). That means Ham, Campbell, and Jenkins are bye-bye (which I'm glad of :D )!!

Signing does mean that they are the property of the Pistons, but does not guarantee a roster spot. But with the guaranteed contracts of the NBA, it would be highly unlikely they get cut.

As for the NBDL, a player can be sent down at any time during his 1st 2 NBA seasons. So there is a good possibility that either player could be sent down in the 1st season. If they are sent down, that opens up a roster spot to sign a player.

The Pistons really only have the need to leave 1 roster spot open, as they are set at every position except backup small forward/shooting guard. If they sign Finley, they will be back in the Finals IMO.

Post Finley
Finley looks to be headed to Miami. The Pistons should look to sign Allan Houston or Jalen Rose (if he is cleared on waivers). Jalen Rose would be a HUGE pickup (more than Finley) and is a Detroit native (Pistons would be his first choice)!! :D

I agree that Rose would be a good pickup, but he was not released by Toronto. Houston was not released by the Knicks either, so neither player is an option. The players who are available to be signed are Finley, Aaron McKie, Derek Anderson, Spree, and Dale Davis.

Dale Davis does not serve a need, but wants to sign with us.

Aaron McKie is a consumate pro and kind backup small forward or shooting guard, but is on his last legs.

Derek Anderson is also on his last legs and there is rumors he could be disruptive.

Spree is a cancer.

Finley still serves as our best option, but we can't force him to sign. Hopefully he will see we are a better option than Miami. He will get more minutes and won't have to worry about ballhogging teammated like Antoine Walker and Jason Williams.

Post Rose/Houston
Is there still a chance either Rose or Houston will be waived? When is the last date a player can be waived?
