Michigan football is recruiting a 400-pound offensive lineman

At 6 feet 8 and 400 pounds, Bradenton (Fla.) IMG Academy three-star offensive lineman Daniel Faalele is one of the more intriguing overall recruiting prospects in recent memory. A former rugby player in Australia, Faalele decided to pursue American football after a Hawaii assistant discovered him in his native country at a local gym.

Enter Michigan and Jim Harbaugh, who shook up the recruiting landscape by scheduling satellite camps in Australia and American Samoa last summer in an effort to increase their international reach on the football field. Faalele, who at the time only had the Hawaii offer, attended the camp and wowed the Michigan staff, which offered a scholarship shortly thereafter.

Now, Faalele has 19 scholarships to choose from, with Alabama, Florida State, Miami (Fla.) and LSU among some of the others who have offered. This is all despite a complete lack of experience; Faalele has still not taken a padded snap in a live football game at this point, and won't until the fall when IMG Academy's season begins.

Despite that inexperience, schools are lining up to watch IMG's practices to get a glimpse of the player coaches are calling "Baby Shaq" after former NBA star Shaquille O'Neal. The Wolverines are believed to be a real factor in Faalele's recruitment, as they're at least partially responsible for his overall discovery and move to America to play the game. For now, however, he's playing it close to the vest recruiting-wise.

"Right now, I'm just trying to find the school I'm most comfortable at," Faalele recently told 247Sports. "It's really just the same as it has been. I am talking to a lot of coaches here and there."

Michigan's Tim Drevno and Greg Frey are among the coaches Faalele says have been recruiting him the hardest. He's also being recruited heavily by Florida State, Miami, Minnesota and Tennessee among others. He is currently ranked as the 27th best offensive tackle in the 2018 class with a real chance for major fluctuation in the ranking depending on how he looks in pads.
