Post Kickoff and Punt Returners: Getting Back to our Roots
I desperately want a quality KR/PR for next year. Ideally, someone who could contribute at another postition such as CB. As has been said in other threads, Maranelli really hurts us by not addressing this position properly. Here are the top KR and PR in college this year. Who would be a good pickup in the draft and could fill a dual role?

K I C K O F F R E T U R N S
(Minimum of 1.2 returns per game)

Rank Player G Kret Yds TD Avg
1. Travis Shelton, Temple 11 23 720 1 31.30
2. Michael Ray Garvin, Florida St. 12 22 662 1 30.09
3. Perrish Cox, Oklahoma St. 13 30 895 2 29.83
4. A.J. Jefferson, Fresno St. 11 31 908 1 29.29
5. Aaron Brown, TCU 10 18 526 1 29.22
6. Bryan Williams, Akron 12 21 609 0 29.00

8. Ray Small, Ohio St. 11 24 364 1 15.17
9. T.Y. Hilton, Florida Int'l 12 18 266 1 14.78
10. Joe Burnett, UCF 12 26 378 0 14.54

It looks like Joe Burnett, UCF is the only one in the top 10 in both KR/PR. Anyone know anything about him? Draft Tek has him ranked as 139 in player prospects. That would put him in the middle of the 5th round. Would he be worth taking with our 5th round pick? He is a CB by trade.

Most of the names on these lists aren't familiar to me.

Joe Burnett is also a Starting CB for Central Florida..He can support the run decent and is a good man to man coverage corner.
He has been on my since last year. He would make a great 4th CB and stud Kick returner on the Lions. Im def going after him in the 5th...and maybe even 3b.

I'd be happy if we could take him in the 5th. Too much of a reach at 3b. JMO

Are any of these guys dedicated kr/pr guys, by that I mean are they only returning kicks or only returning punts? If so, we can't go by the "in the top 10 of both categories" rule. I wouldn't mind picking up one guy to do both even if he only has experience in one.

Who is actually declaring in the draft on those lists?

Some of these guys are not draftable this year. Ray Small has another year at OSU for example.

I really was hoping last year we could of drafted Leodis McKelvin. Someone who is a good CB and also can make things happen in the return game

I may catch some grief for this but drafting Jeremy Maclin at 20 might not be bad granted if he's there at that spot. I know he's not a CB, but he would really help out our return game. I still feel drafting defense is the route we should take, but we've made worse choices in the past and I think I could stomach this one.

Derrick Williams from PSU ran slow unofficial 40 times today. He had a 4.58 and a 4.67. This might cause him to slip. He's gonna show up on the field though.

I wouldn't be upset with Maclin @ 20 with the reasoning that he would fill multiple roles. I've read numerous articles this year talking about the versatile players being the most important now-a-days.

When I think about PR/KR's, I can't help but think what Schwartz said not too long ago... A PR touches the ball just as much as a star wide receiver in any given season (I think he said an average of 70), so how can it not be a critical position to fill on your football team. We have to get a special returner here, and getting a good one that could also fill other roles would be great.

I did hear some bad news about Maclin today, something about him stumbling during a drill and getting checked out by trainers. Appartenly he wasn't out too long and was back on the field but you never know until they report more. Shouldn't be too bad, though.

Updating my post, apparently Derrick Williams had the flu and was advised to sit the combine out by his agent.

I would be upset with Maclin at 20. We have no QB to throw the ball to Maclin and Johnson. The OL could use upgrades prior to WR. We had the worse defense in the NFL. We need TWO starting CB's and a couple of them are kick returners like Darius Bulter.

Maclin will be LONG gone by #20. Depending on the nature of Crabtree's injury, Maclin may be taken before him. I can't see the two of them getting beyond the Jets at #17, at worst.....my latest mock shows Crabtree going to Cinci and Oakland snapping up Maclin with the next pick

If he's there at 20 you take him because of value. That would be +2 value from what we should be getting at 20 (Maclin grades 94, at 20 the players are graded 92). Plus, we don't have a good number two receiver or KR/PR. It should make positional drafters happy and value drafters happy. The only people unhappy about it would be positional drafters that want to draft defensively. The good argument against it would be if another player slips that far with at least +2 value that is a defensive player. Then by all means, make your positional argument and draft accordingly. Just make sure you don't lose value and reach. That's bad and Millenesque.

Besides that, receivers usually don't even get fired up until their second year. He'd work more at returning kicks for us this year while he learns the ropes at WR (under Calvin, a great example for him to follow). I wouldn't return punts with him for a while, they can get banged up).He would still play WR obviously, I'm just saying, with any qb back there, he probably wouldn't have great numbers his first year. Thats just the nature of the WR spot.

He's versatile. He has also scored running the ball. Versatility is great and is worth the most value now-a-days. You can't avoid him because Millen choose some unvaluable WR's in the past. The past is the past. "I have to make the greatest show on turf. I have to draft a QB this year, I have to draft all the WR's for him to throw to, I have to get all tampa 2 players." I can just hear Millen dreaming of ruining another football team the exact same way he got us.

Anyways, back on track. I think he could be a fine return man, which is what this thread is geared at discussing. My bad on the value rant. We need a good return game. It's really important, especially with a poor defense.

I agree and with him being one of the faster CB's at the Combine I don't see 3b as much of a reach anymore. I live in Orlando so UCF is my local team and I have watched Joe since he was a freshman and every year he get better. He's going to be a lights out return man and although he's a little short he play physical and has great leaping ability and great instincts. He's also best friends with Kevin Smith who also went to UCF, so you van be sure Smith will have a very good perspective to share with the coaches and management about Burnett.

Here's a youtube vid of a Punt Return for a TD by Burnett
