Regarding Moala, the comparison was by virtue of his position per Pat Kirwan.
Kirwan wrote:
For teams with 3-4 defenses, USC's Fili Moala looks like a perfect "five-technique" player. He has room for growth in his big frame (6-4, 303) and the long arms to lock up on an offensive tackle and control the line of scrimmage. He's the cousin of Haloti Ngata, who lines up at nose tackle, or five technique, for the Ravens. Moala is versatile and brings the height that teams such as the Dolphins, Browns, Patriots, Steelers and now the Packers are looking for with their defense.

Kirwan is a USC homer and tends to overestimate the talent of players from that program. I've read elsewhere that Moala can expect to be drafted in round 5 or 6. That wouldn't surprise me.

I don't thinnk anybody should argue with you on that point!!!

Ngata IS one of the BEST in the business. I'd say top 5 DT/NT in the NFL.

I think that this is great work, and it obviously took a lot of time, so kudos. I would be upset if the Lions reached for Raji, but I wouldn't put it past them, and I realize that you aren't necessarily advocating for that and you are just trying to "read the tea leaves."

I think the issue may be that the Scout's, Inc. ratings which may be a little stale. For instance, no way that C. Franceis lasts until the fifth round after he looked like Champ Bailey in the Senior Bowl. The problem lies with McShay, I think, who is more of a foil to Mel Kiper than an actual draft analyst.

Easily top five and I would consider him #1

Nice find. That does help clarify what you can get from each tackle. It looks like if the Lions go with a left tackle at the top, it's probably going to be Monroe. It also confirms Scouts Inc. slotting of Oher, if he indeed interviews poorly, he will be the fourth tackle taken.

Also with it being muddled at the top, I'm looking forward to the combine and pro days to confirm the athleticism on tape. Seems like from a purely physical standpoint the specimens rate in this order.

1. Michael Oher
2. Jason Smith
3. Eugene Monroe
4. Andre Smith

Scouts Inc. consistently rates several players at very significantly different positions than other evaluators/media. Some observations based on that list:

It would be justifiable to take Raji at #1. He is one point below the top player ratings and plays a position worthy of the money. Top DTs in the league make 10 million/year. Tommie Harris signed a deal for four years and 40 million.

There are a few picks/positions in which Detroit could select a QB that make sense based on these ratings: Obviously Stafford at #1- ewww.
Quote:
Matthew Stafford QB 6'2" 235 GEORGIA 97 1 4
Freeman at #33- I like this one.
Quote:
Josh Freeman QB 6'5" 238 KANSAS STATE 90 3 31
Nate Davis at #65.

Nate Davis QB 6'1" 217 BALL STATE 78 4 60

Scouts Inc absolutely hates Herm Johnson. Most outlets have him as the 2nd or 3rd best OG, taken in the 2nd or latest 3rd round. Scouts Inc has him as a late round pick. Most outlets have Duke Robinson as the best guard by a long shot. Scouts has him as only one point better than Levitre.

We could take a CB at #20. Scouts has that CB as D.J. Moore. He is very small at 5'10'' and 184. They do not even have Coye Francies in the top 100. Maybe a late round value? I doubt he lasts.

Notice that Coye Francies is at #55 overall and Johnson is #57.
The idea of taking Raji at #1 worries me. I was not all that impressed with his play in the senior bowl. And while I have not been in favor of taking Stafford with the first pick, I have to admit that even though he was terrible against MSU in the first half of there bowl game he was impressive in the second half, exhibiting touch on intermediate throws as well as the long ball. At this point I am totally perplexed on who is worthy of the first pick.

I seriously do not get how Moreno is not a top 10 pick. Is it because RBs careers do not last comparatively wrong? Is it because teams run 2 RB systems? Hes been dominant in the SEC and ran well against some of the top run defenses in college football. He was an important part of the passing game as well. Why wait to see his 40 time to know that he is a great runningback?

I think this is a recent trend. Like you say, we see more stables running, than a lone feature back. Also the shelf life of Running Backs are significantly lower than any other position.

I do agree that he's a top 10 talent. Even Stafford gets credited for being great at Play Action, when it's truly the threat of Moreno that makes Stafford so effective in that regard. It does seem like this class is very top heavy in left tackles. Last year had a lot of LT's but they were spread throughout the round. This years class can create an early run, especially if the Lions go LT first, that would push prospects like Moreno down.

Another possible knock on him might be his inability to get touchdowns against tougher SEC opponents. Half of his rushing touchdowns accounted for were against the three non-conference opponents they played. In the 9 SEC games he played, he had only one multiple touchdown game against Kentucky. He had five one TD games, and was shut out three times. Of course he's not a goal line back, so I wouldn't let that scare me from him.

I have been working on 2.0 and waiting til FA settles down to wrap it up and post. Primarily waiting for what happens to Vonnie Holiday and LJ Smith. But as I work on it, examining the depth chart really opens your eyes as to what needs addressing. Thought I'd post it.

Most notable is the lack of depth across the entire oline, and defensive tackle. Here's some form of depth chart for the lines.

RDE Dewayne White, Ikaika Alama-Francis, Sean Conover
DT ____________, Chuck Darby, Andre Fluellen
DT Grady Jackson, ___________, Landon Cohen
LDE Cliff Avril, Jared DeVries, Rudolph Hardie

LT Jeff Backus, __________
LG Daniel Loper, Manny Ramirez
C Dominic Raiola, __________
RG Stephen Peterman, __________, Junius Coston
RT Gosder Cherilus, Damion Cook

For defensive tackle, if you've got a guy who can stay in every down, then we can get away with being 4 deep at the position. We don't so we probably need a 5 man rotation. Fluellen and Cohen are undersized, which is understandable since they were picked up to be in the Tampa 2. Maybe they keep one, whoever is the better pass rusher for 3rd down, but I don't see keeping both on the team if they don't bulk up. Maybe Cohen at 275 lbs can be sent to compete for a spot as a Run stopping DE. Darby can put on the weight which he seemed to lose for the Tampa 2, but he'd be better coming in a rotation instead of starting. We might have gotten away with putting off DT til next year if we still had Redding. Looks like we'll need 2 DT's in the draft if we don't sign another one soon.

On offensive line, we have 4 tackles, 3 guards and 1 center. We have a serviceable starting line. Backus, Loper, Raiola, Peterman, and Cherilus. But it's scary behind that. Cook is the only back up tackle which is scary in itself. Ramirez might be okay as a back up guard. But we have no one to snap the ball if Raiola goes down, and Coston is camp fodder.

The lions may not only want to address the lines getting bigger, they also need to because the depth behind them is scary. Because of that, if no further signings or trades occur, I can see as much as three picks being used on oline, and 2 on defensive tackles. You can have a backup combo guard/center or guard/tackle to reduce that.

As it stands the numbers favor a 3-4. But the personell fits a 4-3 more. I have a feeling 4-3 is going to be the base package. Some variations of how the draft could address this

1a. Aaron Curry LB Wake Forrest
1b. Peria Jerry DT Ole Miss
2. Sean Smith CB Utah
3a. Max Unger C Oregon / Eric Wood C Louiville
3b. Terrance Taylor DT Michigan
6a. Lydon Murtha OT Nebraska
6b. Ray Feinga OG BYU

or

1a. BJ Raji DT Boston College
1b. Michael Oher LT Ole Miss
2. Michael Johnson DE Georgia Tech
3a. Gerald McRath LB Southern Miss
3b. Jonathan Luigs C Arkansas
6a. Sammie Lee Hill DT Stillman
6b. Greg Isdaner OG West Virginia

or

1a. Jason Smith OT Baylor
1b. Rey Maualuga LB USC
2. Alex Mack C California
3a. Dorell Scott DT Clemson
3b. Herman Johnson OG LSU
6a. Chris Baker DT Hampton
6b. Johnny Knox WR Abilene Christian
