This subject was brought up in chat during the Brown's game. I was ahead of the curve last off season because I wanted us to use a late round pick on Louis Sakoda - PK/Punter - Utah this last draft. As it is he went undrafted and currently is not on a roster. I don't have a clue why. The guy was fantastic in College. But, I would like to sign him this off season as a FA. and let him compete with Hanson during the off season.

I like Hanson, but really, we have zero touchbacks this year (or maybe one...I don't know, but I do know we're dead last).
Hanson just doesn't have the leg anymore. Anything beyond 50 seems like a hope and a prayer.
Hanson isn't the best by any means, but he's far from the worst. Let his contract run out and then bring in a big leg rookie.

When we had Matt Prater and NE was looking for a kicker I wanted us to trade Hansen to NE to give him a shot at winning a SB and hand over the reigns to Prater. I've always liked him as a kicker.
As it stands, unless we can get him to a contender, I think the decision is Hansen's to make. If he wants to stick around and break all kinds of records, that's fine with me. He's earned it.

I don't disagree about the touchbacks, but I don't know how you can say that about over 50. He was perfect last year over 50 yards (8-8) and this year so far he's 1-1. That sounds like a lot more than a hope and a prayer. He can still kick field goals. Kickoffs, maybe not so much. But if it came down to one kick to win the game, I'm very comfortable putting it in Jason's hands (or foot I guess).

He could have had more from 50 this year, but the coaching staff apparently doesn't have the faith in him. They've opted to go for it a number of times as well as punting more times than I care to count on potential 50-60 yard FGs.
I'm not saying that FGs of that range are common in the least bit, but the staff should have confidence he can hit a 50-55 yarder at any time, especially in a dome.

I really don't think that it is a lack of faith in Hansen that keeps the coaching staff from kicking fg's in the situations that I've seen. Usually we're down a bunch or we need a kick in the azz to get going. Schwartz has shown a tendency to go for it anyhow, even near the 50 when it is 4th and short.

i say no but its time to find a better punter...hanson might last a few more years. last year was one of his best ever. morton anderson was in much worse shape than him and played into his mid/late 40s...
