As noted earlier in this thread, Steve Savoy has excellant burst speed and can turn it on on the sidelines. We have had several players with the same qualities but the often forgot to take the ball with them.

40 yard dash times do not take into consideration a players quickness. thus the reason for the short shuttle drill. Draft picks are not made on 40 yd times alone. If so the draft would look alot different than it did. Barry Sanders was not drafted for his 40 time but added a great deal to the team with his cat like quickness. How many times was Barry run down from behind on long runs. thank god he wasn't drafted based on his 40 time. Jerry Rice was not exactly a speed demon but may well have been the best reciever in the history of the game. How many track stars have been drafted and released months later.

There is much more to team speed than a bunch of guys that can burn the 40.

If Savoy can hold onto the football better than all the rest, I think we should keep him. I agree that speed isn't everything, but separation is gained through speed more than anything else. If he is an accurate route runner with some decent moves, then he may get some space that way.

Actually, that's not a bad signing for them. I would have liked to seen them take a run at Eric Knott, but this is cool.

Here's a link showing all the players and where they are at.

Tennessee has a boat load.

We have like 3 times the number they show for us. It's not an up-to-date list. The sad part about Tennessee is that quite a few of those guys have a real good shot at making the roster! Poor Tennessee.

Is it just me, or is anybody else really disappointed with the level of undrafted free agent talent the Lions are getting? Is this the result of poor offers or does it show that Mariucci isn't a draw for potential young players knowing he prefers veterans, even if they suck.

With the guys that were out there who would have been an upgrade at the backup FS and SS spots, I don't see why M&M didn't bust rectum to get any of them here. It's mind boggling new_shocked.gif

I think the latter is correct, Mike. I guess the whole Holt scenario goes to show young guys that if you outplay a vet in Detroit, you'll get your real shot in a couple years.

I hope Will Matthews makes the team at FB. I saw him pave the way for Cedric Benson the last couple of years and he did a pretty good job IMO.

I really like what I am hearing about Howard Jackson. Drummond has been excellent, but the last 2 years, his season ended early because of injuries. The Lions definetly could use some depth in the Return Specialist position. qtank.gif

I liked what I saw out of Thump Belton last season... Matthews doesn't have the athleticism that Thump has.

I don't know if Thump is still around, is he? Still, Matthews did a solid job at Texas and is a better blocker than Belton. And that's what the fullback position is mainly for. With our three receivers, I don't expect to see a fullback on the field all that often.
