NFL clubs could soon be permitted to trade compensatory draft choices for the first time.

The Competition Committee recommended that compensatory picks be tradable, NFL spokesperson Michael Signora told NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport. NFL clubs would need to approve the change and it could be submitted for a vote on Dec. 2, Signora stated, noting that the impetus for the change is to give clubs more flexibility in draft preparation.

The extra draft choices are awarded by the league to NFL clubs that lose more free agents that are ruled to be compensatory than they acquire, up to a maximum of four picks. In this year's NFL draft, 14 NFL clubs shared 32 compensatory picks among the draft's 256 total choices. The earliest compensatory picks ended the third round of the draft. The New England Patriots selected Oklahoma defensive end Geneo Grissom with the first compensatory choice (No. 97 overall).

Their importance isn't to be overlooked.

NFL stars chosen with compensatory picks include New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady, former Dallas Cowboys offensive lineman Larry Allen and former Philadelphia Eagles safety Brian Dawkins.

Has anyone else seen this? I believe it's a good thing for us especially this year with the possibility of us having multiple comp. picks and Mayhew not here to squander them.

Yeah I saw a report on that a few weeks ago. That would be huge especially if we get the 3rd for Suh and the 5th for Fairley. That'd give us a lot more maneuverability.

Seems like every team would be for this. There are probably some owners that just throw money around that will vote against it, but it would be a real boon to teams that have trouble retaining stars and the teams that like to sign their guys cheap or let them walk.

Especially for us with so many high picks before the Rookie salary cap

I don't understand why they were never tradable in the first place.

Owners OK trading of compensatory picks, shorten legal tampering window

NFL owners approved two changes Wednesday that might have an effect on the NFL draft starting in 2017 and free agency in 2016.

The owners, who are meeting in Irving, Texas, voted to allow compensatory draft picks to be traded beginning in 2017 and also voted to shorten the "legal tampering window" before free agency from three days to two.

In the past, compensatory picks -- awarded to teams for losing a certain number of free agents -- have not been tradeable.

The "legal tampering window" is a time period for player agents to contact teams about free agents before the official league year begins.

Dialogue between teams and free agents is permitted, but they are prohibited from coming to contractual terms until the market opens.

Sucks for us that it takes effect in 17. Why does this stuff always happen to us?

It's usually towards the end of March.
