Post Can't Find Apple Quality
I've seen this argument made on this forum before: that you can't find a laptop with the quality of an Apple product.

Ignoring the fact that it is a statistically bogus claim (studies have shown Apple laptops break down just as often as laptops made by other companies) I give you this bad boy:

Yeah, and for $4000, I can buy a pimped out alienware laptop too...

None of my apple products have ever had any issues...2 iPods, 2 iPhones, 2 iPads, 2 iMacs....

My 2 laptops, 3 desktops, zune, archos jukebox, etc have all had problems...

Spec wise that thing is similar to a maxed out 17 inch macbook pro. Probably a few higher specs, but it didn't give full details on the site.

As for Macs being higher quality or not, I'd like to see the statistics you're referring to. I did a quick google search but all I came up with were blogs and people's opinions. In my personal experience, Macs are just more stable and the user experience is better. I've used Windows machines most of my life and only switched to Macs about 4 years ago. (Also, I'm a pretty tech savvy guy. I built my first computer, so I know how to build and configure windows installs and carry out medium level tech support). The difference is night & day. For example, setting up a wireless router on a mac couldn't be simpler. Doing it on Windows requires having a wired connection from the computer to the router, going through menus and settings that are somewhat confusing, etc. The Mac setup is wireless (imagine that! A wireless router has wireless setup!), and it is very intuitive (for me).

The other big issue I've found is the build quality of the hardware. Recently, some manufacturers have caught up. But I'll give you another example of where they are lacking. When Windows 7 came out, I was impressed enough to try switching back to it. So, last summer I bought a new, maxed out Dell. It had higher specs than I could get on a Mac and was very fast. However, the build quality of the computer itself was lacking. The trackpad didn't scroll smoothly, the screen had dead pixels after 3 months, and in general it just didn't have as high of a quality with regards to squeak & rattle issues. That's a big one for me. I've rarely ever had any issues with the Macs I've owned, and when there are any issues I simply go to the Apple store and they take care of it (often times for free).

I know this is all anecdotal, and like I said I'm interested in seeing whatever studies you know of. But, in my experience I prefer using Macs.

Post Re: Can't Find Apple Quality
Its different user groups and people need to realize that. Apple has one OS (clearly they upgrade it as time goes on), Apple designed and tested hardware, and a focus on easy use and limited access to third party. Windows is a wide open OS, anyone can do almost anything to the OS or add thrid party. Anyone can make a laptop and sell it with a Windows product and windows does nothing to guarantee its workings.

That being said, I can go out and buy a 200 dollar laptop if I want that will break in a year depending on how I use it. You can't buy a laptop from Apple for 200 dollars that'll break in a year, it simply isn't an option.

If you want quality, you are going to have to pay for it and either the hardware manufacturuer or the software manufacturer is going to have to properly marry the hardware with the software. In Apple's case they do both, in Windows case you can find Windows certified partners and gold partners that try to dot he same thing. In both cases you are going to pay for what you want.

Any idiot trying to compare an Apple Macbook Pro for $1,200 minimum/cheapest option to the Dell $400 dollar special with the SAME specs is already proved they are out of the discussion. They are working towards two different markets with customers willing to or not willing to pay for the quality. But I can certainly go out and buy a $1,200 windows machine that either sucks (because I didn't go with a valid vender who is just overcharging me) or I can go with a proven vendor who is using high quality components with the best tolerances married to the software and get teh same quality.

What Apple does is they take the customer expertise out of the equation. There is no guessing game, you are going to get a good product, no reserach required. It's a good business model. They don't have quality no one can match, they simply don't sell something that is of low quality. Smart.

Dell is never going to produce a laptop at the same quality. You have to use their warranty to make sure you get a good one. Dell's focus is lots of spec's at the lowest price. They are only a pC integrator, they don't design boards or any of the hardware. They just put it together. You bought a plastic Laptop which will never hold together like the aluminum shells.

Simply put, you paid for higher specs, not higher quality.

In my experience Apple products are much more reliable. I used to work in a Mac shop and loved it. Because I worked on Macs, I've typically bought PCs for home use. My current laptop is a Sony Viao, wasn't the cheapest product and I now wish I had bought a Mac Book. I also work on HP computers at work, they are terrible.

Love my two iPods, my iPhone and my iPad. I won't make the mistake of buying a PC laptop again.

That is my own personal experience anyways.

I'll add, we have a macbook pro and love it as well as an Ipad2. My wife will likely go with a iPhone on our next upgrade but I'll stick with the Driod as I want the features of the Driod personally. I think the iPad is a little light on the capabilties, I think it is still a bit too much like a giant iPhone, but that will likely get better. All the products I have gotten from Apple are exactly as advertised, the quality matches the price you pay.

For work there is no way I could get by with anything but a Windows PC (Engineering and softare programming tools). I need that level of toolsets and functionality. But at home, all I do is surf the web, maybe make a document with OpenOffice, picture editing... which is all handled without fault and featured well in the MacBook. Been 2 years without more than a reboot needed. My work PC in the same time has been through 3 different Dell shells and 4 harddrives.

I just got an iphone the other day, I've actually had some horrible luck with Apple products and great luck with Windows. It's all about how you treat your stuff though with MS, if you watch porn and download stuff your probably going to get viruses. That's not really MS fault, if you use it right your not going to have problems.

I have had an ipod touch, and another ipod both break on me just from general use. The sound went out in both of them...Hoping my iPhone has better luck. Girlfriend upgraded to a Samsung Charge so she gave me the iPhone. (she just got the iphone a month ago, changes phones like underwear I swear)

The big reason I'll never buy an apple is because I game alot on my PC. Apple obviously is pretty much impossible to game on as alot of games don't even come out with Mac versions.

You'd be a clear focus market for Windows, you simply can't get what yoou need from Apple and likely they won't be working to get you in their user group anytime soon.

I also had an ipad and sold it. Another reason Apple is not that impressive to me is because all of their products are like the exact same thing. Ipod touch is no different than an Ipad, which are no different from Iphones, which really is not that big of a difference even from their computers. Selling the same product in different cases really. It's obviously worked for them though.
