Was hoping for Hankins but with Williams signing I feel that puts and end to that. Maybe Branch or officially signing RJF to round out the bunch pre draft.

Geez, I've gotta rethink myself on the Lions. Our O-line is still a problem, but Bobby Quinn has plugged a lot of holes over the last week. I wonder if he has any money left to sign a starting C/G free agent. He does that, and his draft is wide open. Heck, I'd even be happy with a first round RB, and I hate signing first round RB's, WR's and TE's.

Sylvester Williams, DT
Ricky Jean Francois, DT (Oops, I understand this is Fake News.)
Christian Jones, LB
Devon Kennard, LB
Deshawn Shead, CB
Kenny Wiggins, G
Luke Wilson, TE
LaGarrette Blount, RB

Did anyone seriously think Bob Quinn could sign so many free agents in positions of need? I am impressed.

Where does that leave us for the draft, Oline, RB and DE?

It just means we don't have to rely on the draft to plug holes. Williams is a 1 year deal, don't know about RJF. Wilson, Blount, Shead, 1 year. Buys us time. Some of these guys could be keepers, or they could be band-aids. Still build for longevity through the draft, and draft picks are much cheaper. Still players available out there (FA's), and there will be more to come that get cut by cash strapped teams, and later on when teams have cut downs. I think they'll still be picking BPA somewhat at 20. Just because we've got some depth at DT doesn't mean they'd ignore Vea or Payne if available at their pick.

Big name FA's are always fun to sign...and sometimes actually help a team ( for the Lions, Dre Bly, Vanden Bosh, Golden Tate, Holi Ngata) but I think Quinn is doing a decent job of finding the trench players. So often one can be blinded by the past achievements of one player, that we ingnore the how feasible a lesser player can contribute to the team.

And as such, I really like the Wilson signing. Maybe Ebron will break out in Indy, but I think with 3-4 capable WR's, Wilson will be the sneaky TE the Lions need.

It's 7:50 pm on the 23rd. Has anyone heard anything on Rickey Jean or Hankins?

Feel like we may be waiting for Hankins' price to go down a bit.

Added another LB, Jonathan Freeny. Looks like a vet min type player, either a camp body or ST/depth guy. Played under Patricia at some point, so he should be good for helping the other LBs in training camp.

Birkett said the Lions are not currently in on Hankins. That does sound like things could change if his price goes down.

these are mostly 1 and 2 year deals, stop gaps. none are anything more than average players, some like Blount are above average in certain roles. i dont see anything to be impressed about. even in blount s case it wouldve really helped if they had him last year or the year before. id like to see them draft some defensive team speed but they are so weak on that DL which may be a bigger need. the lb core in my opinion is still quite weak, they need speed and athleticism in that back 7-8. they have a good but slow secondary and a good qb - same as last year but now with one less receiving option. i think its nice to get value on ur deals but this GM stubbornly seems to make it too big of a priority. you have to have some good players and so far the majority of the good ones he has are the ones he inherited from mayhew's team of 3 years ago.

Lions sign Robert Ayers
Posted by Josh Alper on August 27, 2018, 11:34 AM EDT

The Lions have added a veteran piece to their defensive line ahead of this week’s final preseason game.

Defensive end Robert Ayers‘ signing was announced by the team on Monday morning. Cornerback Josh Okonye was waived to make room for Ayers.

Ayers was released by the Buccaneers in March after spending the last two years with the club. He had 60 tackles, 8.5 sacks and three forced fumbles in 24 games with the team. Ayers, who also spent two years with the Giants and five years with the Broncos, has 35 sacks over his entire NFL career.

The Lions likely hope he can add to that total while playing across from Ziggy Ansah in Detroit this season. Anthony Zettel, Kerry Hyder and fourth-round pick Da'shawn Hand also seem to be on track for roster spots.

Good signing this late in the offseason, adds more QB pressure to a a dline that really needs more. Not a sack artist, but he gets a lot of QB hits. Maybe on passing downs pairing him with Ziggy will give them that little extra to turn the hits and pressures into sacks.

and one practice and he s gone. i ve always thought he was a talented player too, i wonder what happened here. lions end up keeping only 7 on the d line.
