Okay then let me put my foot in my mouth!
What happens when a player has more then two years and is cut after June 1st? Also what happens when a player retires?
If a player has more than two years left and either gets cut or retires, the entire signing bonus allocation is accelerated if the release or retirement takes place prior
to June 1st. If it happens after
June 1st, the team is only hit for the signing bonus allocated in the contract for that year, with all remaining years being used the following season.
For instance, let's say Az was release last year before June 1. His cap hit would have been $3.15 million dollars. However, if he had been cut after June 1, 2004 his cap hit in 2004 would have been $1.05 million, but would have been $2.1 million in 2005. Same deal goes with retirement.
