The Lions need help at running back. Badly.

The trade for Ronnie Brown fell through because Jerome Harrison has a brain tumor. Jahvid Best is out indefinitely with his latest concussion, a condition that caused him to be available at pick No. 30 in the 2010 NFL draft. The only other options are Maurice Morris and Keiland Williams.

The free-agency cupboard is largely bare, with guys like Clinton Portis, Larry Johnson, and Laurence Maroney available.

Why not give Tiki Barber a try?

Humbled (and flabbergasted) by the lack of interest in his services, he could be the difference maker that the team needs. And if he creates any trouble, the Lions would just cut him.

Regardless, the Lions need help. And Barber finished phase one of his career with more than 2,000 combined rushing and receiving yards in three straight seasons. Under the circumstances, he’s worth at least a look.

Post Re: Killer's Korner
Ndamukong Suh might be the biggest casualty of the NFL’s new collective bargaining agreement, the deal that severely curtails padded and full-contact practices.

“Suh is a blind dog let loose in a meat house,” a former all-time great defensive lineman told me in the aftermath of Detroit’s loss to the Atlanta Falcons.

Suh is doggone mad if you believe the Falcons. Receiver Roddy White and center Todd McClure claim Suh trashed-talked Matt Ryan as the quarterback writhed in pain with what looked like a serious knee or ankle injury in the third quarter.

“I had respect for Suh before the game,” McClure told Atlanta sportswriters. “But when Matt was on the ground, the things he was saying and the trash he was talking was definitely uncalled for.”

White added: “I lost a whole lot of respect for 90 today.”

Football is a funny, hypocritical, dangerous and violent endeavor. The combatants try to hurt each other, but they never want to see an opponent injured. There’s a difference. No group is more in tune with that difference than the NFL, a league inhabited by young men from tough backgrounds who are responsible for loved ones unable to escape poverty’s harsh realities.

Suh, who has yet to address the Falcons’ allegations, might have crossed a serious line.

Why? How has a kid who left the University of Nebraska with such a sterling, on-and-off-the-field reputation transformed from the second coming of Reggie White’s Minister of Defense into bizarro Mean Joe Greene?

Ndamukong Suh, dirty player? Having witnessed Suh’s destruction of the Big 12 Conference, no way would I have ever believed that would be Suh’s NFL reputation. Before the 2010 draft, one of my favorite sportswriters, ESPN’s Liz Merrill, profiled Suh. She quoted a former Suh opponent praising the Outland Trophy winner for his relentless, classy and non-trash-talking style of play.
Suh, with his late and illegal hits on quarterbacks and trash talk, has broken character. Why?

He can’t practice his craft. And, given the circumstances, he might have the wrong coaches. Head coach Jim Schwartz and defensive coordinator Gunther Cunningham are the NFL’s version of Bo and Carl Pelini, the dynamic duo at Nebraska. Schwartz, Cunningham and the Pelinis are all certifiable — crazy. Put them in the right laboratory and they’ll cook up a defensive batch that would make Walter White of "Breaking Bad" green with envy.

With Suh manning the middle and Tuesday and Wednesday practices to go full speed in pads, the Pelinis cooked up a college defense that was nearly impossible to penetrate. Opponents couldn’t run, pass or score on the 2009 Cornhuskers. The Pelinis unleashed a beast.

So far this year — with the new CBA rules limiting padded practices to 14 a season (that is not a typographical error) — Schwartz and Cunningham have unleashed Frankenstein, a monster they can’t control and a monster who is playing a key role in destroying the Lions.

That’s right. In the NFL, you can practice in full pads only 14 times during the regular season. Eleven of those practices must occur once a week during the first 11 weeks of the season. That’s not nearly enough practice time for a young defensive lineman. That’s not nearly enough practice time to fix a run defense as broken as the Lions'.

I know Gunther Cunningham. He knows how to stop the run. I’ve seen him do it while working as defensive coordinator for Marty Schottenheimer, an old, intelligent linebacker much like Jim Schwartz.

Marty was the king of the 2-1/2-hour, full-contact practice on Wednesdays and Thursdays. Marty loved the Oklahoma/hamburger drill in training camp. Marty beat toughness into a team two days a week and once on Sundays.

The Lions are not tough. They give up 5 yards per rushing attempt. On Sunday, Atlanta’s Michael Turner (122 yards) picked up where Frank Gore, Matt Forte and Adrian Peterson left off against Detroit. It’s not that difficult to gash the Lions on the ground, especially if the opposing offensive coordinator gets beyond his fear of running directly at Ndamukong Suh.

“He’s a blind dog let loose in a meat house.”

He’s a mad dog. He’s untrained. He can be fooled, trapped, influence blocked, tugged. You can never overpower him. But you can get in his way, prevent him from finding the football and stop him from protecting the linebackers.

There’s a rage that must burn inside of a great defensive tackle. The same rage can be found in a middle linebacker and strong safety. The trio — DT, MLB, SS — forms the heart of a defense. The rage meter is set the highest for the great defensive tackle. His fire must burn the hottest. His fire is the hardest to control. If left unattended, his blaze will engulf the team.

The Lions, losers of two straight, are on fire. They’re undisciplined and unsound, particularly on defense. I’m not sure it can be fixed this season.

PLEASE say it isn't true SUH! Don't let the harsh realities of Detroit, and a skirt wearing NFL Commish, soil you or your reputation.... Play mean, play tough, but don't play dirty, keep it clean and Detroit will be respected because of their toughness, and determined abilities to affect other teams. Don't make us into the likes of Minnieapolis, who's off the field porno parties, and other garbage made them a laughing stock....

Say it isn't true, SUH!

Perhaps one of the dumbest, most fabrication filled articles I have ever read. Garbage like this is why I hate sportswriters around the globe. When there is no story, they make one up.

The Lions get gashed in the run game because they teach their D-linemen to penetrate, not read and react. Misdirection, traps and plays designed to use that aggressive scheme against them is what is working. When teams run simple dive plays, they don't work.

And as for the accusations out of Atlanta....complete and utter fabrication. Look at the video clip that Avril posted on Twitter. Roddy White and Todd McClure claimed Avril was kicking at Ryan's feet.

Never happened.

They claimed Ndamukong Suh was standing over Ryan taunting him.

Never happened.

Both guys were standing next to each other, about 5 to 8 yards away. None of the Falcons players said a thing to those two. I would imagine that if they HAD done what they are being accused of, at least one Atlanta player would have taken immediate exception to their actions. Nothing.

In fact, when Matt Ryan first went down, the only Lions player in contact with him was Lawrence Jackson. And he IMMEDIATELY motioned over to the Falcons sideline to get their medical staff out there for help. None of the Atlanta players motioned for the staff, it was OUR PLAYER that did.

McClure and White are liars. What their motive is, I have no idea. But make no mistake, those two are lying bastards who have absolutely no respect from me. I hope both of them suffer year ending injuries, just as an act of karma.

I just contributed an article as I saw it, and was REALLY hoping that this team wasn't starting to implode from the hype leading up to San Fran and now Atlanta.

I could've sworn there were a beat writer or two that were SUPPORTERS of the Lions that could counteract this article, get media play and call the guy out who wrote it. This would probably lead to media war, but the best way to combat a lie is with the truth, and exposing the author.

Why is it not being broadcast (or maybe it is) and why aren't purvayers of these types of stories held accountable?

To be taken seriously or not is one thing, but to call a man a liar is something altogether different.

This is just the sports version of what is wrong with the media today.

Case in point: Do you remember Israel's "aggresive" interaction in Lebanon, and how Reuters was posting the criminal civilian deaths that Israel was inflicting on the Lebanese? Only to have the actual series of pictures come out that showed the "Lebanese Dead" as being a live action role player, who was willing to crawl into rubble, and act as if he was dead.

This is a foreign example, but an example nonetheless. Now we could move to the U.S. and bring up examples there, but I'm afraid I hijacked the thread enough with my statements so far.

What I'm trying to say that a COUNTER article should be posted nationwide that calls out Mr. Whitlock for his shoddy reporting, calls out the two Atlanta football players for possibly making false statements, and screaming the injustice of false accusations as LOUDLY as possible. I will admit that when I read the article I was appalled at Suh's behavior, and now I feel like a heel, because I happened to believe a story written by a rag reporter, who should be working in the mail room instead of posting this kind of drivel.

Just sayin....

Now back to our sponsors!

Post Re: Killer's Korner
Well I put my money where my mouth is and wrote the following email to Mr. Whitlock, courtesy of Fox Sports. Let's see if he responds!

Man you really got me, being an out of state Lions fan i have no choice but to rely upon media to find out anything Lions, and that lead me to your aritcle. I understand that there is a certain amount of sensationalism that needs to happen in order for you to catch a readers eye, but LYING? Yes sir, I said it! You wrote an article about Detroit Lions players trash talking an injured Falcon QB, and then you quote two of their players. I am ashamed for you! What kind of integrity does a man have to have, in order to put up such shoddy reporting. I actually went to the Lionbacker.com website and posted your article in "Killer's Korner" becuase I was afraid that the media hype had begun to get to the Detroit Lions. But then I find out, after posting your article, that it was false, the two Atlanta players weren't even close to the action, Suh and Avril had their backs to Ryan, and Lawrence Jackson a Detroit Lion was calling in Atlanta's training staff to minister to Ryan.
But you've taken it to another level, and put a man's name and reputation on the line. HIs aggresive play has been the stuff of legends until Goddel, started putting skirts on the NFL. Detroit was fighting for some respectibility and people like you are trying to kick them back into the cellar. You may not feel any remorse for what you've written, because it's padded your paycheck for another week, but as I said, I'm ashamed for you.
I think it would be nice to have some DECENT reporting done, that stood upon integrity, and did it's best to build players up, not demonize them. I do hope that you will do the right thing and re-write an article make the appropriate corrections, but from what I hear I doubt that will happen. I've been told by fellow Lions' fans that, "Oh that's just Jason Whitlcok, no one take's him seriously anyway." So maybe if you did the right thing Mr. Whitlock, you would gain some respectibility, and people wouldn't make such comments about you or your writing, and let us hope that someone doesn't stumble across any "dirty little secrets" you might have, that would tarnish your character, because you'd discover how hard it is to recover from those kind of hits! Have a blessed day!
