Fairley could play Sunday

The Lions are reportedly hopeful that defensive tackle and first-round draft pick Nick Fairley will be able to play in his first game of the season Sunday against the Dallas Cowboys in Arlington, Texas.

Adam Schefter of ESPN reported during halftime of the network's "Monday Night Football" broadcast: "The Lions are hopeful that he can come back from the foot surgery that he underwent for a stress fracture. They'll monitor him throughout the week and try to ease him back in on select passing downs."

Fairley, the 13th overall pick out of Auburn, returned to practice Friday on a limited basis for the first time since he suffered a fractured left foot in training camp Aug. 1.

"This was a big step," Lions coach Jim Schwartz said Friday. "He'd been doing a lot of stuff on the side and doing a lot of lifting and conditioning and things like that, but actually putting a helmet on -- he doesn't even have any stickers on his helmet. It's just part of the process, though."

Fairley started running with trainers behind closed doors last week and still appeared to have a slight limp when he walked off the practice field Wednesday.

On Friday, though, he moved well through a series of position drills before reporters were escorted out of practice.

ALLEN PARK — Practicing in full pads for the first time since Detroit drafted him with its 13th overall pick was rookie defensive tackle Nick Fairley.
According to an ESPN report, though, the 6-foot-4, 291-pounder has "told friends and family -- who are traveling to Detroit for the game -- that he expects to participate in a situational capacity."
No one from the Lions would confirm the story, but head coach Jim Schwartz indicated after Wednesday's practice that Fairley's time on the field would increase gradually.
"I think when we do get him back, there will be a progression to that," he said. "You're talking about a guy that played in zero preseason games, and you always have a progression with those. We won't go from zero to 100 without taking some steps along the way."
Justin Durant was back on the field after missing last week with a concussion he suffered during the game against Minnesota.
The 6-foot-1, 240-pound linebacker is already casting his vote to participate in Detroit's Monday Night Football game against Chicago, but he knows it's up to the coaching staff.
"I think I'm in," he said. "If it's up to me, I'm in. But we'll see how the rest of the week goes. Today felt good. I did a lot of running, got my heart rate up, didn't feel any of the symptoms, so I feel really good about it."
Durant, though, said he was medically cleared - there's no distinction between being cleared to practice and play in a game.
The injury was caused by a late hit on the last punt of the Vikings game.
"It's kind of tough to eat that one," he admitted, "but it happens. It's football."
Other Lions players who returned to practice after sitting out Wednesday's practice were: receivers Calvin Johnson and Titus Young, and linebacker Stephen Tulloch.
