Jahvid Best is headed to IR after suffering a concussion in Week 6.
The Detroit Lions announced on Friday that Jahvid Best would be placed on injured reserve, sidelining the running back for the rest of the season.

Due to the Thanksgiving holiday, the move is not expected to become official until next week.

"From the outset, we have been appropriately cautious and have followed all medical protocol with respect to Jahvid's injury," Lions coach Jim Schwartz said. "We look forward to his continued improvement and eventual return to the field."

In six games this season Best had gained 390 yards on the ground on 84 rushes and added another 287 yards receiving. He was among the top 10 players in the league in yards from scrimmage at the time of his injury.

Best had the best performance of his career against the Chicago Bears on Monday Night Football in Week 5. In the game Best ran for 163 yards, including an 88-yard touchdown.

Best's agent, Tony Fleming, told the Detroit Free Press that he expects his client to be back on the field next year.

"Definitely expect him to be back next year," Fleming said. "Being put on IR is more precautionary because he's continuing to see specialists, and he's just being evaluated still. It seems to be in the best interests to sit him for the season, but there's nothing long-term that's been established."

Best is the third running back the Lions have lost for the season.

Rookie Mikel Leshoure was lost for the season when he tore his Achilles tendon in training camp. Jerome Harrison was put on the reserve/non-football injury list with a brain tumor discovered after he was traded to the Philadelphia Eagles.

Kevin Smith, who the team re-signed while Best was sidelined, suffered a reported high ankle sprain in the Lions' 27-15 loss to the Green Bay Packers on Thanksgiving. If Smith is sidelined for an extended period of time, the Lions likely would add another running back to the roster to supplement Maurice Morris and Keiland Williams.

I was holding out hope that he would return this season, but I should have known better. This is the reason why I didn't want the Lions to draft the kid. Hopefully, he'll recover and be ready to play next year, but for how long?

I just posted on this in the injury thread too. The reality is that the Lions need to assume he's done for his career at this point. He can't continue like this.

I'm glad he's on IR, he's a good kid and I'm worried about his life after football. If we have a chance to draft Richardson in the draft, I hope we do. even if it's in the first round

well hopefully we ll have a good handle on how le shoure s recovery has gone by the time we get to the draft. if leshoure is doing well then i wouldnt necessarily look to take a rb in the first round but you look down the roster and you have an againg maurice morris that is really more of 3rd down RB than a true backup and an adequate but injury prone backup in kevin smith. drafting a rb or signing a legit FA is a very strong possibility

I said it before--I think we were trying out AB during the bye week in case Best goes on IR. You have to figure we'll sign him this week.

A first round RB is out of the question. If recent history has proven anything it's that 1) Rb's are only good for about 5 years, and 2) you can get a really good Rb in rounds 2-6.

I said when we drafted him, we DRAMATICALLY over-reached for Best. He was nothing but an injury-prone, tweener. Reaching again is not the way to fill the hole. Draft a 3rd round RB, start Morris/Leshoure, groom the kid, give him some carries, work him for a couple of years, and draft another 3rd rounder to groom, period.

And again, as I've been saying for the last 10 years... FIX THE PHUCKIN' O-LINE!!! You know why SF is better than us? It's not their Qb, their Wr's, their high-power TE that they hardly use... it's their ability to be CONSISTENT on offense due to their running game, and offensive line, coupled with strong talent on D.

Detroit Lions Sign Aaron Brown, Officially Place Jahvid Best On IR

by Sean Yuille on Nov 28, 2011 6:45 PM EST in Detroit Lions News

Running back Jahvid Best was officially placed on injured reserve by the Detroit Lions today. The move ended his season and opened up a spot on the roster. The Lions decided to fill it with a familiar face: running back Aaron Brown.

Brown was drafted by the Lions in 2009 and appeared in 15 games during his rookie year. He made two starts and gained 131 yards on 27 carries. In 2010, Brown appeared in only six games and rushed for 58 yards on 17 carries. He has one career touchdown -- a 26-yard reception on a pass from Matthew Stafford in the 2009 game against the Cleveland Browns.

Brown was let go by the Lions following the final round of roster cuts this year. They replaced him with Keiland Williams, who was one of only two healthy running backs on the roster prior to the Brown signing.

The Lions worked Brown out during their bye week, but they decided to sign Kevin Smith instead. Smith had a breakout game against the Panthers and was playing well against the Packers before suffering an ankle injury that has put his status for Sunday's game against the Saints in question. Since Brown knows the offense, he should be ready to go if Smith can't play.
