NFL Breakout Players for 2005

Kevin Jones
RB, Detroit Lions

When Jones was picked by the Lions in 2004, he promised fans he'd be the next Barry Sanders. That was a stretch, but the Virginia Tech product did gain 1,133 yards and average an impressive 4.7 yards per carry. With all of Detroit's threats at receiver, Jones might see some big holes from defenses ignoring the run.

Call me crazy - But wouldn't 1133 yds w/ 4.7 average been considered a breakout year already?

In any case SI's has it's list of breakout players...

I would have been upset had KJ not made that list. There were some suspect players on that list that KJ definately trumped. They mentioned circumstances surrounding most the other players like competition but failed to mention that KJ was relagated to RB by committe for almost half of the season

I agree Alpha, they list players such as Nate Burleson who already had a breakout year.

Drew Bennett having a breakout year? He caught 80 balls last year for over 1200 yards! If that's not a breakout year, I don't know what is.

Players like KJ, Stephen Jackson, LaMont Jordan, Keary Colbert, and Tyrone Calico are guys who should be on that list and are guys who are ready to have a season-long-breakout year. Guys who've shown a glimpse of what they can do, but haven't fully proven themselves yet.
