Megatron threatens single-season receiving yardage record
PFT wrote: Calvin Johnson threatens single-season receiving yardage recordPosted by Michael David Smith on November 24, 2012, 5:28 PM EST Thursday’s loss to the Texans ended any realistic hope the Lions had of returning to the playoffs this season. But it also reinforced that the Lions are getting their money’s worth out of the enormous contract they gave receiver Calvin Johnson in March. Johnson, who had eight catches for 140 yards and a touchdown on Thursday, now has 1,257 receiving yards through 11 games this season. That puts him on pace for 1,828 yards on the season, which would top his NFL-leading total from 2011 by 147 yards. A total of 1,828 yards would also be the second-best single-season total in NFL history, behind only Jerry Rice’s total of 1,848 yards in 1995. If Johnson picks up the pace a bit over the final five games of the season (and he’s trending in the right direction, with a whopping 619 yards in the last four games), he’ll break Rice’s record. That would be an amazing accomplishment. Rice is generally recognized as the best receiver ever to play the game, and he was at his best in 1995, playing on an excellent offense with a Hall of Fame quarterback passing to him in Steve Young. If any receiving number would seem to be safe in the pass-happy modern NFL, it’s that one. But Johnson has a good chance of breaking it. http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/20 ... ge-record/

He can't because of the "Madden Curse"

And he's obviously been half-assing it this year.

The Madden curse strikes and CJ ends the season with 1,847 yards...

He'd have to average 118 yards a game to break the record. He's at 114 yards a game right now. I think he can do it.

I think it's possible.. sure would be nice to see him break it. IF he does get close going in to the final game.. I wonder if Rice would attend?

Of course he will... It's a "me first record," on a "me first team." He racks up loads of meaningless, garbage yards in meaningless, garbage games where we're trailing and need huge chunks of yards.

There are very few Barry Sanders in this world.

OK, let's review:
If Calvin drops the ball, he's a bum and he's half-assing it. If he catches the ball, it's because he's a self-centered egomaniac.
Everybody got that straight?

Everybody got that straight? No one said that. I think it's hilarious that you guys think that just because CJ racks up some yards that it automatically means that he's trying and not 1/2-assing it. For CJ to rack up 100 yards he only has to try on 4 plays. If you think that makes a game, so be it, but my bar is a little higher than that. I see the guy dogging it on routes, not running full speed, not going over the middle (again), barely lifting his arms in a weak attempt to catch the ball, not even getting his hands on the ball, crying and whining that his "injury" is effecting his "grip," but he's not even getting his damn hands on the ball. He's playing like hell, if you think he's playing great because he's getting decent numbers that's fine, but personally, I disagree.

Oh, this makes much more sense. You're suggesting he could have the greatest statistical season of all time by only trying four times per game. Got it.

The topic of this thread is this season. He's on pace for 1,828 yards this year, which is only 40 yards shy of Jerry Rice's all-time record. So yes, CJ is currently within reach of the greatest statistical season of all time. Even though he's dogging it.

Definitely Like I said, Randy Moss ALSO set records ADMITTEDLY 1/2assing it on the field. CJ IS that talented. He's nearly a foot taller than Jerry Rice, he faster than Jerry Rice, and he can out jump the guy in his prime by nearly another foot, AND we have to throw more because we're always losing. I'd say that's a perfect recipe to break the record, even while dogging it.
