Associated Press

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- The Kansas City Chiefs have released wide receiver Steve Breaston and tight end Kevin Boss as part of their roster overhaul under new coach Andy Reid and general manager John Dorsey.

More From ESPN.com

The Chiefs released two players that served as reminders of the last regime's failures, writes Bill Williamson. Blog

The team announced the moves Tuesday in a statement on its website.

Breaston was lured to Kansas City in 2011 by former coach Todd Haley and general manager Scott Pioli, and signed a $22.5 million, five-year deal. But he fell out of favor last season under coach Romeo Crennel, catching seven passes for 74 yards in 10 games.

Boss signed a $9 million, three-year deal last offseason, but only had three catches for 65 yards before sustaining a season-ending concussion in Week 2 against Buffalo.

I always liked Stevie B in college and with the Cards. He put up similar stats as TY in 2011 with the Chiefs before whatever happened in 2012. Could be a good #2 option and probably not to expensive. He could also be washed up, it's possible I'm looking at him through maize and blue colored glasses.

When a team that is hurting at WR let's one go that's not a glowing endorsement for a guy. I'm not against the idea of bringing him in and kicking the tires, but my doubts are there.

Yours is a valid point and like I said I'm a bit of a UofM homer, but Breaston was counting for $5M on the cap to be their WR3 with Bowe and Bladwin ahead on the depth chart. That's a little high for a 3rd WR when they need to resign Bowe.

Breaston is nothing more than a KR/PR #4 WR that has big play capabilities. He hasn't been great at route running, he hasn't been great at getting open, despite having great speed, and he hasn't been great at catching the ball either. I love UofM, but he's had more than his fair share of drops in the NFL. That said, he knows what to do with the ball when he gets ahold of it in space. As a #4 WR he often finds himself open and man can he go when he gets open. Further, IMO his greatest attribute is his ability to take it to the house as a KR/PR specialist.

That said, he hasn't had any significant KR/PR duty in two years, and he's hearing the wrong side of 30. I have to believe that he's better than what we currently have on our roster (including Mike Thomas), but I would much rather spend a 5th-7th round pick on a KR/PR specialist. Breaston's vet min is around $1 million a year. A 5th-7th round rookie is going to cost us around $300k. I don't think this team can afford the cap space of bringing Breaston in, and he would only be a PR/KR stop-gap, as he slows down over the next two seasons.

As much as I loved him in a UofM uniform, I'd pass on him even at the vet min. at this point.
