But that was already part of his contract. That's his base salaries going up each year which is normally how contracts are.
I get that inherited, but we're already "kicking the can" and making the escalation of his contract worse. We should be able to offset it later on, but we put ourselves in a position to not be able to do that with so much backloaded guaranteed money. We effectively "bargain" ourselves out of a good position, and a position of leverage, by being fiscally irresponsible. Most teams owe a huge chunk of NON GUARANTEED money at the end of a contract, making it easy to extend, or "restructure" with a reduction in pay. Not the Lions, we restructure in the worst way, take non-guaranteed money and push it back to make it guaranteed.
