Post Lions - Two-back Set to be Used
Lions | Two-back Set to be Used Quite Often - from

Greg Johnson, of, reports Detroit Lions head coach Steve Mariucci said Thursday, May 26 that despite having three talented wide receivers on offense, the team would use a two-back set at least half the time. RB Kevin Jones led NFL rushers over the last six games of the 2004 season, and FB Cory Schlesinger was busy denting face masks on linebackers on many of the runs. The Lions have high expectations this year and they need to deliver whether it is using the three-wide set or the two-back set. This season, they might be able to run and pass.

Mooch's goal always has been to be able to run 55 - 60% of the time; So this doesn't surprise me.

My questions are:

1) Does this mean we keep 4 RB's (Jones, Pinner, Bryson and White)?

2) Will the Lions bring in someone better than Paul Smith to back up Schlesinger?

I don't think that will change the number of RB's we carry. We may carry four, but that would be because they don't want to let Pinner go, IMO. We have always carried three, if my memory serves me correctly, and our base set has normally been two rbs, so it doesn't change much.

Don't remember where I heard it but there was talk of Bryson playing more FB this year than in the past. Which might mean they keep 4 RB and only 1 FB. Don't expect them to keep more than 5 total no matter who they are.

This might also mean seeing a lot of BMW at wink-wink TE-slot receiver. In other words in contrast to the two TE formation, I wonder if we might see some zero TE formations.

what i think would work would be to use 3wide i te 1back then send the slot receiver(mw) very close to the tackle wo the te to make it similar to a 2te singleback then with same setup send mw behind qb to act as fb for standard i-formation.
