Post KFFL Updates on Lions
Lions | Lehman May Play Middle Linebacker - from www.KFFL.com
Tue, 31 May 2005 05:59:31 -0700

Steve Pate, of The Daily Oakland Press, reports Detroit Lions LB Teddy Lehman may make the switch to middle linebacker, if LB Boss Bailey is 100 percent ready to take over at strongside linebacker and if LBs James Davis and Alex Lewis can handle weakside linebacker. If moved, Lehman would challenge LB Earl Holmes to be the starting middle linebacker. When drafted in 2004, Lehman was called the "middle linebacker of the future." The question for the Lions is does that future start in 2005?

Lions | Determining Use of Offensive Sets - from www.KFFL.com
Tue, 31 May 2005 05:54:11 -0700

Steve Pate, of The Daily Oakland Press, reports Detroit Lions head coach Steve Mariucci and offensive coordinator Ted Tollner will be employing the base offense with one tight end, one fullback, one running back and two wide receivers. However, their version of the West Coast offense calls for the use of many formations including zebra (3 wide receivers, 1 TE, 1 back), eagle (4 wide receivers, 1 back, 0 TE) and E (3 wide receivers, 2 backs, 0 TE). They now have to determine how often to go with those multi-receiver sets, likely even on first down. Mariucci is a run-oriented coach and swears he will not deviate from that main theme. RB Kevin Jones can run out of those spread formations, and the offense could be far more explosive on first and second downs, if they choose to open things up.

Lions | Free Safety Battle - from www.KFFL.com
Tue, 31 May 2005 05:51:21 -0700

Steve Pate, of The Daily Oakland Press, reports Detroit Lions S Terrence Holt and S Bracy Walker are currently the two players on the roster that will battle for the starting free safety position for the team.

Lions | Wilson Expected to Miss Start of OTAs - from www.KFFL.com
Tue, 31 May 2005 05:50:26 -0700

Steve Pate, of The Daily Oakland Press, reports Detroit Lions rookie CB Stanley Wilson is expected to miss the start of organized team activities May 31, because his college class is still taking final exams.

Lions | Swancutt Expected to Miss Start of OTAs - from www.KFFL.com
Tue, 31 May 2005 05:48:23 -0700

Steve Pate, of The Daily Oakland Press, reports Detroit Lions rookie DL Bill Swancutt is expected to miss the start of organized team activities May 31, because his college class is still taking final exams.

Lions | OTAs Starting Today - from www.KFFL.com

If Lehman can take the middle LB spot, the Lions have one of the fastest groups of starting linebackers in the league. I wouldn't count Holmes out yet - he has been very productive the past few seasons.

Come on Holt!

Bracy Walker is NOT in the running for free safety. He is clearly the backup at strong safety. Vernon Fox is the only player that is challenging Holt at free safety, and that isn't much of a challenge.

As far as I can tell its Holts job to lose right now, and I like the sound of that. I to wouldnt count out Holmes yet, he is still a very solid player and should have another productive season this year.

I thought Bracy Walker was the backup strong safety as well....??? thats what the depth charts all say anyways

Vernon Fox looks more like a special teams player than a backup anything

PRO:
??Recorded a career-high three special teams tackles vs. Minnesota (12/19)
??Resigned to Lions active roster September 22
??Released by the Lions September 18, 2004
??Signed by the Lions off of waivers September 14, 2004
??Started two games in 12 appearances with San Diego in 2003
??Intercepted one pass and had three pass defenses while appearing in all 16 games during 2002 rookie season
??Recorded first and only career interception vs. Houston (9/15)
??Signed with Chargers on April 26, 2002 as an undrafted free agent

2004:
??Recorded one special teams tackle at Tennessee (1/2)
??Recorded one special teams tackle vs. Chicago (12/26)
??Recorded one special teams tackle at Green Bay (12/12)
??Saw limited action vs. Arizona (12/5), vs. Indianapolis (11/25) and at Minnesota (11/21)
??Recorded one special teams tackle at Jacksonville (11/14)
??Recorded one special teams tackles vs. Washington (11/7)
??Played on special teams but did not record a tackle at Dallas (10/31) and at NYG (10/24)? Played on special teams but did not record a tackle vs. Green Bay (10/17)

pretty sad depth there... maybe a June first cut or Ty Law would move somebody to Free Safety but I dont know who??? doesnt seem like anyone else is big enough

I read a bunch of comments from Mike Ohara and he seems very high on Ty.. In fact he said he would rather see the lions get Ty Law as is (recovering from an injury) than a R.W. McQuarters in his prime! that was from his Q & A segment on the Det. News website  but who knows!

DetroitLions.com reports Detroit Lions WR Charles Rogers (collarbone) still wore the red, non-contact jersey at practice Tuesday, May 31 as he recovers from a broken collarbone. Despite wearing the red jersey, Rogers has already adapted the mindset of being completely healthy. In fact, he says he has not been constricted by what he can do on the field. "I'm just going with the flow," said Rogers. "I feel good."

Lions | Bailey out of the Red - from www.KFFL.com
Tue, 31 May 2005 14:45:23 -0700

DetroitLions.com reports Detroit Lions LB Boss Bailey (knee) was no longer wearing the red, non-contact jersey at practice Tuesday, May 31. Head coach Steve Mariucci expects Bailey to practice at every practice since the team is only practicing once a day. When asked if Bailey would be limited in training camp Mariucci replied, "We'll see how he feels. If there is a guy that has had an injury, we will limit a little bit what he does. If a guy is a veteran kind of guy, you'll limit what he does on occasion. We'll try to monitor some age and some injuries in training camp and kind of play it by ear."

That's very encouraging to hear about both CR and BB. I for one am very excited about them both being back this year.

Lions | No Cuts Coming? - from www.KFFL.com
Tue, 31 May 2005 14:51:55 -0700

DetroitLions.com reports Detroit Lions head coach Steve Mariucci said the team has no plans to release anyone as a June 1 salary cap cut. "Right now, we have nothing planned for tonight, unless we discuss something this afternoon, but right now we're happy with the guys we have," said Mariucci.

Tue, 31 May 2005 14:29:28 -0700

Jay Clemons, of DetroitLions.com, reports Detroit Lions head coach Steve Mariucci said it's possible the club may acquire a June 1 salary-cap "casualty" from another team, provided it's a feasible move. "But right now, we have nothing planned. We're happy with the guys that we have," said Mariucci.

HHMMM... I wonder... Could it be...

Lance Schulters? Kyle Turley? L.J. Shelton? R.W. McQuarters?

Who do you think?

Law is the first option. Then they might move for June 1 guys if there is any one left by the time Law is healed?

This is not really a big deal; lots of tweaks like this will likely happen. Does anyone know anything about Murphy?

Well...Murphy's been in the league for 5 years...with 3 different teams. Granted, KC and Indy have good OLs.

This Murphy feller is listed as a C under everything I've seen.

He was released by the Niners on May 23. Why do we pick up guys who will barely be able to compete as backups in the league. I mean, SF has a terrible line and they didn't even want this guy.

BTW, who was this Blake fellah? I've never heard of him.

Here's the games Murphy's played/suited up for. He hasn't started a game since he came into the league as a URFA.

2000 KC - 0
2001 KC - 0
2002 Indy - 10
2003 SF - 1
2004 SF - 15

Titans | Agent Says Schulters Will Likely Be Cut - from www.KFFL.com
Wed, 1 Jun 2005 11:45:20 -0700

Jim Wyatt, of the Tennessean, reports Tennessee Titans S Lance Schulters' agent, Brian Levy, said Tuesday, May 31, that "it is a probability" that his client will be released by the team soon. Levy added that he believes there are some coaches and officials with the Titans' staff that would like Schulters to stay, but considering Tennessee released six other starters in February for cap reasons, it's likely Schulters will be cut too. Schulters is scheduled to earn a 2005 base salary of $2.7 million and $3.65 million in 2006. He would count $4.2 million against the Titans' 2005 salary cap.

This is a player I would like to see the Lions pursue. I think Shulters is a better option to reinforce the safety position than Ty Law is. Too many seem to think Law can simply make the switch to safety and be an impact player. Not every good corner can be an effective safety.

I also feel Shulters will be more cost effective.

I am not totally sure on this, but isn't Shulters the guy always talking a lot of smack and giving teams all kinds of bulletin board material every week? I don't mind a guy who is a little cocky--especially in the secondary, but I just dunno if Lance Shulters has consistently backed up his talk....then again, I might be thinking of a different Titan Db....

I would tend to agree with you on this. Schulters has age, cost and ability to play safety going for him over Law. Don't be surprised if they look real close at McQuarters tho.

As for what's going on in camp...

Lions | Mariucci Pleased with Day Two - from www.KFFL.com
Wed, 1 Jun 2005 18:28:02 -0700

Curt Sylvester, of the Detroit Free Press reports Detroit Lions head coach Steve Mariucci was pleased with the second day of minicamp, Wednesday, June 1. "It was a lively practice," he said. "I loved the energy today. We were bringing it. We had a couple of blitz periods and it got pretty feisty."

Lions | Rogers Aggressive - from www.KFFL.com
Wed, 1 Jun 2005 14:28:37 -0700

Jay Clemons, of DetroitLions.com, Detroit Lions head coach Steve Mariucci noted the aggressive play of WR Charles Rogers at practice Wednesday, June 1. Rogers is certainly getting more reps than he did during the April minicamp.

Lions | Focus Turning Turnovers into Points - from www.KFFL.com
Wed, 1 Jun 2005 14:23:28 -0700

Jay Clemons, of DetroitLions.com, the Detroit Lions spent time at practice Wednesday, June 1 having their defense practice returning turnovers for touchdowns. "We're going to get our share of interceptions (and fumble recoveries this year)," said head coach Steve Mariucci, "and we've got to turn them into points." In 2004, Detroit ranked second in the NFL in miscellaneous touchdowns, which accounts for special teams scores (punt returns, fumble returns, kickoff returns) and defensive scores (fumble and interception returns).

This is all good to read. I'm very excited about this year.

Here are some more MOOCH quotes from camp yesterday...

Quote:
HEAD COACH STEVE MARIUCCI

On Dan Wilkinson not being at mini-camp: ?He is not here, but what you guys have to keep in mind is that these are voluntary camps and I hope he volunteers to be here soon. Dan is trying to work it out where he can be here. He has to deal with a couple of things at home and hopefully he will be here at some point. I spoke to him last week and I am hoping he gets here.?

On the practice today: ?Today was a lively practice. I loved the energy today - we were bringing it. We had a couple of blitz periods and that got pretty intense.?

On DE Kalimba Edwards: ?He is practicing today and as you know there is a legal issue that needs to be taken care of by the people that are involved and we are not really commenting on any of it until it gets sorted out which it will be soon. He is going to continue to be with us in practice and all those sort of things.?

On the new offensive system: ?We are all participating, we have a wrinkle here and there in the new system. It is very important right now that everybody is practicing and most guys are. Adam Herzing hurt his foot yesterday so he will be out for a while. All the new guys are out there and they need to be. You can learn by sitting in a meeting and you can learn by watching practice but the best thing is being out there, practice, do it, repeat it, have a variety of looks and it is very valuable.?

On WR Charles Rodgers? health: ?Charles Rodgers is practicing more than he did in that first mini-camp, I think he is gaining some confidence and he is bumping around here a little bit. Even with a red jersey on he needs that type of contact.?

On the type of distraction that would be caused if a coach left a team during the playoffs: ?Larry Brown is not leaving the team during the playoffs. He came here to do a job and he is doing it. He is a heck of a basketball coach, he is a heck of a coach at any sport, at any level, and he has done a great job. I know he loves coaching, we all know that. He coaches every year then he coaches in the offseason. He is as good as it gets and I know he and his team want to win another ring. Anything after that we do not know whether it is health related or whatever, it is up to him and he will handle it and deal with it when he feels that he needs to. He is trying to be focused on winning games and it has been amazing to me how much he has had to answer questions not related to the Miami Heat. He is trying to stay focused and that team playing last night had 60 points at halftime with no turnovers. That was as well played a basketball game as I have ever seen. Let the man coach - he is good at it, that is it.?

On whether athletes get distracted by things around them: On the performance of the secondary so far in camp: ?We have been second in the league in miscellaneous touchdowns in the last couple years. It is not what you teach it is what you emphasize so when we have an interception in practice the emphasis is make a play at the ball put it away with four points of pressure and get it up in the endzone and have ten other guys escorting you to the endzone. We have good ball skills in our backfield, we are going to get our share of interceptions. We have to turn them into points and that was what the discussion was about."

On (Terrence) Holt getting the majority of the snaps at free safety: ?He had a some interceptions as a rookie if you recall and he did not get to play a lot last year like he wanted to so now he is lining up there at safety and he is doing a good job. He is a vocal guy, he is a heads up guy and he is getting better with practice.?
