There’s a fine for that!? Delmas dinged for wearing wrong socks

Let me get this straight …
Players around the NFL are permitted to wear bright pink shoes and gloves for breast cancer awareness, but not black socks?
OK, I give up.
Yes, the NFL allows its players to show support for a good cause, but the fact the league issued Detroit Lions safety Louis Delmas a $5,000 fine on Saturday seems a bit extreme.
It turns out Lions players are only allowed to wear blue and white sox, according to the league. Last Sunday against the Arizona Cardinals, Delmas, a 26-year-old free safety, had a hint of black showing around the upper band of his stockings, which saw his wages garnished by the league.
What’s stranger is the fact Delmas got caught in the first place. How many viewers around the league would even notice such a miniscule detail?
Delmas joins a long line of bizarre fines thrust upon professional athletes over the last few decades.
Major League Baseball fined Barry Bonds $5,000 in 2006 for wearing oversized wrist bands.
A year earlier, the NFL fined former Minnesota Vikings head coach $100,000 for scalping complimentary tickets.
Finally, and maybe the most bizarre pro sports fine we’ve heard of, former Oakland A’s utility man Dave Kingman was once fined $3,500 for sending a rat to a reporter in the press box.
As for Delmas, the former second round pick played dumb this week, chalking up his wardrobe mistake to Detroit’s equipment crew, which he said failed to warn him.
Even for non game play, still find a way to stick it to the Lions.
