Well two of the safety's the Lions were rumored to interested in have already signed elsewhere, Malcolm Jenkins and T.J. Ward. Looks like the Lions are going to ignore the prime talent and pursue low level FA's.

These contracts are absolutely absurd. Teams are spending $$$.

Willie Young visiting the Jags. They have a ton of cap space so I expect he's gone. We'll need another rotational DE.

Bucs just signed Verner for about what we signed Chris Houston for. Verner got 4 years $26M with $14M guaranteed while Houston's deal last year was 5 years $25M with $7.5M guaranteed.

Much cheaper than the deals other top corners were getting Shields and Davis both got 4 years 39M.

Also, released Cowboys Center Phil Costa visited us today and we're talking with former Bills TE Scott Chandler.

Costa could be a good signing. He can back up both guard and center plus he's only 26, so he could easily be a replacement for Raiola next season.

Have the Lions had any significant talks with anybody that would be considered an impact player?

Any new receiver they sign would be an impact to me. Tate's visit doesn't wow me though. Good run after the catch receiver, but I don't see him as a deep threat. Maybe more of a slot type, not very big (5-10, 200 lbs).
First day of FA and no significant WR signings. Bodes well for us possibly, maybe we're able to add a couple of solid , proven receivers to the roster.
Like the idea of possibly adding to the O-line at center with Costa, it alleviates the NEED to spend a higher pick in the draft for Dom's eventual replacement.
Somewhat disappointed the Lions didn't make a stronger push to get a premier safety.

Lions not hunting for big game, turn sights to Hynocerous

Given the top-heavy nature of their salary cap situation, the Lions appear to be working the fringes of the free agent market.

According to Tim Twentyman of the team’s official website, they’re hosting former Cowboys center Phil Costa today and Giants fullback Henry Hynoski Thursday.

Costa could help fill in on the line after the release of Leroy Harris. Hynoski, who wasn’t tendered as a restricted free agent, would offer something the Lions lack, a true thumper in the backfield.

After investing in Reggie Bush last offseason and keeping running back Joique Bell off the market with an extension, the Lions obviously want to offer some protection for the backfield under new coach Jim Caldwell.

I thought Costa had a very rough start at C for the boys but then settled down and played pretty good once he and Romo got the C/QB exchange down. He was a cost cutting move. Like his age (26) and experience with 20 starts.

Signing Hynoski would be a pleasant surprise.

Noticed the Saints carry 2 FB's on their roster, must be part of our new offense.

Wow crazy. After agreeing to a 5 year deal with the Raiders in the early stages of day 1, Rodger Saffold failed the Raiders physical and is now back with the Rams on a 5 year deal. No terms of the new deal. Looks like the Raiders might take a LT at 5 which could help push Sammy down to us.

I said this last year: the whole BPA thing works a lot better when you address needs in FA. Assuming Ihedigbo is a done deal, I think we need a situational edge rusher and we're good going into the draft.
