Lions release depth chart for Browns

ALLEN PARK, Mich. -- The Detroit Lions released their unofficial depth chart for the preseason opener against Cleveland and other than a quickly-corrected mistake that had David Akers still on the roster at kicker, here it is.

The Lions stressed that this depth chart is unofficial since it is "compiled" by the team's media relations department. From the looks of it -- compared to what I've watched in practice -- it is very, very unofficial:

OFFENSE:
Quarterback: Matthew Stafford; Dan Orlovsky; Kellen Moore; James Franklin

Running back: Reggie Bush; Joique Bell; Mikel Leshoure; Theo Riddick; Steven Miller

Fullback: Montell Owens; Jed Collins; Chad Abram

Wide receiver1: Calvin Johnson; Kris Durham; Jeremy Ross; Corey Fuller; Quintin Payton.

Wide receiver2: Golden Tate; Kevin Ogletree; Ryan Broyles; Patrick Edwards; Andrew Peacock

Left tackle: Riley Reiff; Cornelius Lucas; Michael Williams

Left guard: Rob Sims; Rodney Austin; Alex Bullard

Center: Dominic Raiola; Travis Swanson; Darren Keyton

Right guard: Larry Warford; Garrett Reynolds; Bryce Quigley

Right tackle: LaAdrian Waddle; Corey Hilliard; A.J. Dalton

Tight end: Brandon Pettigrew; Joseph Fauria; Eric Ebron; Jordan Thompson; Jacob Maxwell

DEFENSE:
Open Defensive end: Ezekiel Ansah (PUP); Darryl Tapp; George Johnson

Defensive tackle: Nick Fairley; Andre Fluellen; Caraun Reid; Gregory Hickman

Defensive tackle: Ndamukong Suh; C.J. Mosley; Jimmy Saddler-McQueen; Xavier Proctor

Closed defensive end: Jason Jones; Devin Taylor; Larry Webster; Kris Redding

SAM linebacker: Ashlee Palmer; Kyle Van Noy; Cory Greenwood; Justin Jackson

Middle linebacker: Stephen Tulloch; Travis Lewis; Brandon Hepburn

WILL linebacker: DeAndre Levy; Tahir Whitehead; Julian Stanford

Cornerback: Rashean Mathis; Bill Bentley; Nevin Lawson; Aaron Hester; Mohammed Seisay

Cornerback: Darius Slay; Cassius Vaughn; Jonte Green; Chris Greenwood

Free safety: Glover Quin; Don Carey; Isa Abdul-Quddus

Strong safety: James Ihedigbo; DeJon Gomes; Jerome Couplin

SPECIALISTS:

Kicker: Nate Freese; Giorgio Tavecchio

Punter: Sam Martin; Drew Butler

Long snapper: Don Muhlbach

Kickoffs: Sam Martin; Nate Freese; Giorgio Tavecchio

Punt retuner: Jeremy Ross; Golden Tate; Steven Miller

Kick returner: Jeremy Ross; Theo Riddick; Steven Miller

THOUGHTS:

This is obviously very, very unofficial -- both from what it says at the top of the depth chart and also from what is actually on it. So take what you see here as a very, very loose guide for what you might see on Saturday night against Cleveland.

Among the biggest differences that I can tell: Eric Ebron is not going to be behind many tight ends at all and should see a ton of snaps on Saturday night. That seems to be more of a rookie paying their dues thing. Same with Ashlee Palmer over Kyle Van Noy at SAM linebacker, although there has been some rep-splitting there. Tahir Whitehead has repped at both middle linebacker and outside linebacker -- and would be the No. 2 option at both the middle and WILL spots more than likely at this point. If Ansah does not start, don't be surprised if Devin Taylor starts over Darryl Tapp. While Nate Freese is listed as the starting kicker, Giorgio Tavecchio has been pushing him hard.

For the 1st time in my life, I hope the Lion's coaching staff is more concerned about getting ready for the regular season, than they are about preseason wins.

I think that will be the case. Judging on past performance when Caldwell was the HC of Indy.
