Not a great first series...

Just watched the game, I could swear the Lions changed their home game color to yellow. Granted, some of the flags were unfair but the vast majority were well deserved, Caldwell better reign these in or we're in for a long season.

Stafford looked like his usual self, taking unnecessary risks in one quarter and playing brilliantly in another. But, I loved how our first team O-line is doing, the receivers and tight ends looked great, I hope Fuller makes the team over Durham, and this might finally be the year of Broyles.

it was nice to see Erbon make the key block that sprung Reggies big run. I'm not worried about his blocking being a liability anymore!

Downside: Same old penalties. Same old inconsistent Stafford.

Upside: Whitehead, Taylor and Broyles.

Overall: it's only pre-season.

They have the talent on offense to go as far as Stafford can take them. But how far will that be? Will he throw to the open man or try to throw to CJ in triple coverage? Can he finally get his accuracy problems under control?

Do you recall the third game last year? After Stafford had two good showings in the first two pre-season games, his third game was pretty inconsistent. See a pattern here? Same thing this year. Looks good in the little bit he plays in the first two games, but then becomes mister inconsistency in the third game.

Same old, same old. New coaching staff, new promises, same results.
Offense sputtering despite getting even more weapons. Penalties galore. Lack of discipline. Shoddy secondary play.

Buckle in guys. It's going to be a long season.

Like I said right after we drafted Ebron, if Stafford can't get us to the Super Bowl with all that we have put around him this year, he never will.

If he fails, we should trade him for whatever we can get. Sign Mallet as a FA. And then draft another QB in the 2nd round.

slow down fellas, they just added an entirely new coaching staff and added Tate and Ebron (who s barely mixed in w the first unit at this point). Stafford isnt the only one learning the new scheme. I think we re jumping to conclusions a bit pre emptively. it also looks like what we ve seen in the preseason is a scaled back version of the offense and we know very little about the defense as well (other than "scouts" comments on slay and esp greenwood appear to have been pipedreams) i expect the scheme to be diverse and aggressive. week 3 of the preseason isnt when the team is supposed to be peaking anyway. i agree i havent seen anything special but its just too early to pass judgement on all of this.

You want to know the difference? Caldwell calling out Suh and the team for the penalties in the media, which is something Schwartz refused to do. We don't ever know what goes on behind closed doors, but Caldwell isn't just ignoring it publicly like the last regime. And the media only sees a small portion of practice, so I always take what they say with a grain of salt where it comes to player progress.

And yeah, Stafford started off rough, but looked better going forward. There's a lot of new chemistry to be made, so I'm not going to predict anything about the regular season based on the preseason. Giants look terrible, Cam broke a rib, so again, the setup is there for the Lions. The consistency questions can only be answered during the season. Not by a handful of series without any chance of getting a rhythm.

I've followed Lions football since Barry Sanders took the field and I don't think that I've ever once seen the Lions beat the Giants. I hope this is the year. I hope it's also the year to win in Green Bay.

Caldwell's offense in Baltimore had more penalties and penalty yards than the Lions did last year. Is this really the man we expect to make the team more disciplined and curb the infractions? Based on both the Lions and Caldwell's history, this is to be expected.

The Lions offense also averaged 4.7 more points per game, was 7% better than the Ravens in 3rd downs, and had the same completion percentage. As for picks, well Baltimore threw the second most in the league (23) - the Lions had 19. This is the main man brought in to fix Staff/offense.

You'd better hope we have the 2013 Lions offense vs. the 2013 Ravens offense.

Everyone keeps saying Caldwell is going to fix all the issues we had under Schwartz - I for one can not figure out why!

You guys are neglecting one big difference: Stafford moved the ball without CJ and when CJ was in, he spread it around. Yes, the first couple series he was forcing it to CJ (ie falling back into bad habits), but he settled down after that. You're obviously forgetting games like the Browns last preseason: CJ was out and we could do absolutely nothing.

i love it, i look at the Giants game and think - wow the giants look bad, eli looks bad, what happened to there passrush?, etc - then i start to think wait a second "we never beat the NY Giants!" and "this is the same giants that wins super bowls in years when they barely have any business being in the playoffs!"

i think mooch's lions are the last to beat the giants when joey harrington with rookies roy williams and kevin jones went to the meadowlands
