Post Lions at Ravens.
The season is on the brink. Win and we still have at least the slightest chance to make the playoffs. Lose: and it is time to start studying draft prospects.

With just a few exceptions, it is time to blow this team up and start over.

They should be fired for trying to run 3rd and 1s up the middle still. IT DOESNT WORK

2nd and 10 - Lions send a delayed blitz and Flacco complete to Wallace who bobbles it and goes out of bounds, ruled incomplete and challenged by Harbaugh. Slay in coverage. On review Wallace bobbled until maybe infinitesimal moment before his knee hits the turf out of bounds. Im not sure its conclusive but they overturn it for the Ravens.
1st and 10 - Ravens run a delayed run to Allen out of I formation, Washington overpenetrates upfield and Worrilow and Davis read pass as well and Allen gets around the left side for 9 yards. Hayden and Whitehead get trucked at the end of the run.

Miles Killewbrew picks up the TE in coverage but he s the only one seeing pass on the play and the FB comes immediately open and walks into the end zone on the short pass for 6.

Ravens 17
Lions 0

LIONS BALL
Jones takes the touchback on the booming Tucker kick.
1st and 10 at D25 - Green runs left out of gun for 2 yards. Decker gets benchpressed 4 yards backyards but Green makes something out of it.
2nd and 8 at D27 - Lions nicely set up a screen to Tate who doesnt quite get the Jets on but gets to the 36 for a first down.
1st and 10 at D36 - Lions run Green right, Fells tries to take his man where he wants to go but the defender Suggs spins back and nobody was even attempting to blcok the second level and he goes down for gain of 1.
2nd and 9 at D37 - With a simple 4 man rush neither the RT Mihalik or Green even attempt to block the DE and Stafford gets flushed out of the pocket and looks to throw but runs out of bounds for a one yard gain. 4:26 to go in the half.
3rd and 8 at D38 - Mihalik gets easily smoked by the DE and Stafford goes down for a sack.
4th and 15 - Martin gets off a bouncing punt but the return is fumbled near the Lions sideline on Don Carey's hit the ball squirts out of the pile but the Lions safety Washington and Maybin couldnt pry it away.

AND I GIVE UP....TOO UGLY and hopeless so far.

I think we've seen what this staff has to offer. Cooter was deemed a genius when he took over the offense but it sure looks like the NFL has caught up this season. We still have no running game and we can't protect Stafford at all. I know a lot of the line was hurt today but even in games where we had everybody except Decker, the right side has been trash.

I have a feeling Quinn sticks with Caldwell for another year, which will just waste another year of Stafford. By the time we have the right combination of coaching and talent, Stafford will be done, either because he's too old or because he got killed behind our line.

It sure looked like he had something broken in there. That was not good, to say the least.

Even if the Lions win 3 or 4 of their remaining games and sneak into the playoffs, to what end? They'll just get throttled by teams with better talent, scheme, and real head coaches. If we do go on a run, we'll be stuck with Caldwell for at least another season.

They need a new line coach and either a new OC or a dedicated run game coordinator. JBC doesn't understand how to use the run game and the Oline still can't run block no matter who is on the line. Lombardi's blocking schemes were garbage and the changes they made when JBC came in helped, but they haven't improved much since JBC's early changes. I don't need to see Caldwell fired to be happy, but if firing him is the only way to get big changes to the offensive staff then get rid of him.

Post Re: Lions at Ravens.
well thats good news for stafford that may be his diaper changing hand...

as for TA/Caldwell, how can they not call a timeout when they have 10 on the field and one is running off the field? seriously how many times can they do this? caldwell may be a decent coach from monday to saturday but these inexcusable types of mistakes keep on happening and its not acceptable. cooter s offensive run calls at times dont even have the LBers accounted for in the blocking scheme - ie there were some plays where the front 5/6 make there blocks and the rb is getting to the "hole" on time and its a 3 yard gain or less. also have some passes where we have 7 men blocking (5 OL, the RB and a TE - neither running routes) and Baltimore is rushing 4 but still getting a man in untouched. then defensively the Lions are playing to stop the run every time they go to that offset I formation but Baltimore is throwing out of that formation almost half the time so we re getting burned by the play action and even when they do run it - we cant stop em anyways.

im now of the thought process that caldwell needs a wayne fontes like miracle finish to keep his job. none of the coordinators or position coaches need to be held onto either.

Hey now, Quinn fixed all of it with his 'upgrades' to the OL in free agency.

I don`t like Caldwell, but players still have to make plays. At least when they are in position. We leave far too much on the field. The question revolves around why?

I am of the opinion that there is too great an emphasis on talent and not enough on brains. I understand you have to work with what is available, but it is rarely a talent issue the Lions face. It is almost always a mistake made by a player or the wrong play called for a given situation. Part of this falls on Quin, but as Millen once pointed out, giving a coach a player he doesn`t want generally means the player doesn`t play. So that puts a bunch at Caldwell`s feet. Still, when players are dropping passes, losing focus, not playing their keys, it is all the players.

I am alright with Caldwell and staff going, but there is a limit to how much you can turn the roster over and who is to say we don`t get the same problem with the next coaching staff. The problem is this is a match up league with players putting more into how to celebrate a score than scoring or preventing a score.
