TRADE RUMOR: Jerry Rice to the Lions
ESPN and some radio stations in Detroit have reported a trade offered by the Raiders to the Lions - Jerry Rice for a sixth round draft choice. My understanding is that the Lions turned down the trade but it is still on the table as they say.
While Jerry is the GOAT (greatest of all time) WR, he is looking old. He might be a good tutor for Rogers/Williams - his contract scares me...
Here are Jerry Rice's base salaries for the duration of his current contract:
2004 $1,350,000
2005 $1,000,000
2006 $7,000,000
2007 $8,000,000
2008 $9,000,000
I'm not sure what his bonus structure looks like. I don't like the contract one bit and even if he restructured I don't want to even know what that would look like either.

The only tutoring that needs to go on is the continually tutoring that Roy has given to Corners cause he has certainly taken them to school. Jerry Rice WAS great?but that money damn?I like our wide outs just fine?we don?t need a 45 year old on the bench sucking up salary cap IMHO

I agree with you Alpha. Jerry was and always will be the greatest, but there comes a time when they even have to step down. Maybe he could come to the Lions as a receiver's coach.

Jerry has also publically stated that this season was his last season. I would keep that draft pick, we already traded away our 5th next year.

This story isn't dying...
http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/news;_ylc=X ... &type=lgns
Speculation surfaced last week about a possible swap with the Detroit Lions.
``When rumors get started like that, something is going on,'' Rice said. ``I don't know how much longer I'll be wearing the silver and black. The thing is, I know wherever I go, that that team will get something special because I'll give them 100 percent and I'll make plays on the football field to help that team win.''
Michael Lombardi, the Raiders' senior personnel executive, said Tuesday that the Detroit story ``was not remotely accurate.''

I was going to post that read. But you beat me to it. The Lions need another WR. But how long would he be signed for? How much salary cap would Rice take up. If the Lions sign Rice or any other WR that puts high precentage of the salary cap on just WR. Hakim needs to be cut after this season and free up some cap room so Shaun Rogers and others resigned. Cutting Hakim would only be a small cap peanlty.
But as for now I think Rice or Mcardell would be a good pick up.

I only have access to their base salaries:
Streets - $700K (his bonus puts him in the $1 - $1.5M range
Hakim's, base alone the next few years:
2004 - $1.85M - WOW!
2005 - $2.35M - OMG!
2006 - $4.625M -
By comparison, Roy Williams will only make $305K next year.
