Lions | Won't Add Another QB
Tue, 6 Sep 2005 08:29:57 -0700

Mike O'Hara, of the Detroit News, reports Detroit Lions head coach Steve Mariucci said the club would not sign another quarterback to take the roster spot of QB Jeff Garcia (leg, ankle), who is expected to miss up to two months due to leg and ankle injuries. The team will stick with QBs Joey Harrington and rookie Dan Orlovsky. The team will have WR Kevin Johnson as their emergency third-string quarterback.

Lions | No Surgery for Garcia; Could Miss Two Months
Tue, 6 Sep 2005 08:29:16 -0700

Mike O'Hara, of the Detroit News, reports Detroit Lions QB Jeff Garcia (leg, ankle) will not need surgery to repair injuries to his leg and ankle suffered during the club's preseason finale. "This is the news we were hoping for, that no surgery is required," head coach Steve Mariucci said. "You know Jeff's optimism. The doctor said six to eight weeks. Dr. Garcia said five to six. That was encouraging to hear."

Lions | M. Williams Making Progress
Tue, 6 Sep 2005 08:16:55 -0700

Nicholas J. Cotsonika, of the Detroit Free Press, reports Detroit Lions rookie WR Mike Williams is making progress as he acclimates to the NFL and the club's playbook this year. "He's getting better," said wide receivers coach Fred Graves, who admitted Williams was out of shape entering training camp. "He's a work in progress, and he's coming through with more confidence about what he's doing. Obviously he's in better shape. He's going to be good." More importantly, Williams notices his improvement with each practice. "I'm still not there, but I'm a lot farther along than I was a month ago and that's all that matters," Williams said. Williams is currently serving as the team's fourth receiver and is learning four different positions.

Lions | K. Johnson Practicing as Emergency QB
Tue, 6 Sep 2005 07:23:57 -0700

Nicholas J. Cotsonika, of the Detroit Free Press, reports Detroit Lions WR Kevin Johnson worked on some of the fundamentals at the quarterback position during practice Monday, Sept. 5, in preparation to become the team's emergency No. 3 quarterback for the season opener against the Green Bay Packers Sunday, Sept. 11. If the club doesn't add another quarterback this week, Johnson will serve as the third-stringer behind QBs Joey Harrington and Dan Orlovsky. Johnson has experience at the position from high school and as a backup to QB Donovan McNabb at Syracuse.

Wouldn't that be SICK if Johnson played quarterback?

Think of the speed back there! Johnson running like Mike Vick, dumping the ball off effectively. It'd be a run-first offense, which is what we need to exploit the defenses with our receiving threats.
