Roy Williams not conceding starting spot to Dez Bryant: 'Ain't no such thing as me sitting on the bench'

Gerry Fraley - The Dallas Morning News

GRAPEVINE – Roy Williams made a bold, if unfounded, proclamation Wednesday.

He is still a starter at wide receiver for the Cowboys.

"Like I said when I first got here, ain't no such thing as me sitting on the bench," Williams said while participating in a golf outing with the team's corporate sponsors. "Never in my life."

There is a first time for everything.

For the first time in his career, Roy Williams faces a prove-it season. He does not start merely by showing up for duty. Something as seemingly trivial as his weight could become important to the Cowboys' lineup decisions.

By Williams' admission, last season was a drop-filled, confidence-sapping disaster. He tied for 107th in the NFL with 38 receptions and finished the season as an invisible man in the Cowboys' passing game. Quarterback Tony Romo threw only one pass near Williams in the final six quarters.

That sent Williams into an off-season of soul-searching and workouts. As he tried to get stronger, the Cowboys tried to get better at wide receiver by maneuvering in the first round of the draft to select the gifted Dez Bryant.

Williams said he did not consider the selection of Bryant a challenge. Williams focused first on Bryant's kick-returning skills when discussing his attributes.

"He's a playmaker and a game-changer," Williams said. "I welcome that. If you can get a steal like him that far down, why not?"

When the Cowboys drafted Bryant, Williams was well into his off-season work. As was the case last year, Williams focused on his hands and his rapport with Romo.

Williams promised he will not rank among the league leaders in drops as he did last season, with eight – more than all but 11 players. The Romo-Williams search for common ground remains a work in progress.

"Receivers and quarterbacks need to spend a lot of time together," offensive coordinator Jason Garrett said. "You're going to say, '[Roy] has been here a year and a half.' But Tony and Roy playing together more and more will develop a comfort level that will increase productivity."

Williams has adjusted his weight-lifting program, with the goal of adding strength.

It's all about playing weight. Williams checked in at 218 pounds with Detroit and is comfortable at about 215. The Cowboys want him at about 210.

Five pounds is a ton in the world of finely tuned wide receivers, who can be as skittish as thoroughbreds. Williams suggested he felt weak at 210 and needed more muscle to function at that weight. He would prefer to go up to 215.

"That's my goal," Williams said. "I don't know what they're going to say. If I could move well at 215, that's where I should be. But I don't write the checks."

Garrett praised Williams for having his weight at a level the club believes enables him to be quicker and more explosive, vital skills in a catch-and-run passing game.

"That's certainly helping him," said Garrett, who has observed Williams in twice-weekly instructional sessions. "Hopefully, that will continue, and we have no reason to think it won't."

The alternative is somewhere Roy Williams has never gone before: the bench. Words alone do not make a starter.

Unreliable targets
According to STATS Inc., Roy Williams caught fewer than 45 percent of passes thrown to him last season, ranking among the NFL's worst.
Player Team Rec. Tar. Pct.
Louis Murphy Oakland 34 96 35.4
Mohamed Massaquoi Cleveland 34 95 35.8
Bryant Johnson Detroit 35 87 40.2
Roy Williams Cowboys 38 86 44.2
Mark Clayton Baltimore 34 74 45.9

Roy sucks!!! Oh wait... look who finished ahead of him. Either way... Roy's gonna hafta step it up.

If he won't be 'Sitting' then he must be standing.

I heard today on NFL Live that Roy and Romo will be hooking up a lot. Can't find a video or anything on it, maybe they will have one coming out soon.

Roy was traded to the boys 5 or 6 games into the 2008 season while TO was there. There were very good reviews for Roy for day one of OTA's here in Dallas but everyone knows what he is like. In fact, he made some spectacular catch in practice and Jerry Jones asked all the media if they got that on tape. Then again, Jones didn't say anything on the next play when Roy dropped an easy pass.

It is an interesting mix at WR down here with Austin, Roy and now Dez Bryant. They have given their #4 and #5 WRs permission to seek trades (Patrick Crayton and Sam Hurd).

The boys released former Lions guard Cory Procter today and another former Lions guard, Kyle Kosier, to learn how to play center as well and be the backup there. No news on former Lions QB Jon Kitna out of Dallas today...
