Football's summer stock
NFL training camps are about to open and there are some interesting story lines worth following

July 17, 2005

1. Sink or swim

It would be more than enough simply to watch how Nick Saban adjusts in his move from the college game to the NFL's Miami Dolphins. But throw in the return of running back Ricky Williams and the continuing off-field problems of tight end Randy McMichael--Miami's best offensive player last season--and you've got one of the top preseason situations to follow.

2. As T.O. turns

Philadelphia receiver Terrell Owens is not happy. And you know what that means--lots of headlines. Make that a lot more headlines. T.O.'s unhappiness with his contract and his sparring with star quarterback Donovan McNabb was a hot topic during the off-season and it doesn't look like it's going away anytime soon. Will T.O. be a holdout? Will he be traded? If he plays for the Eagles, will he get along with McNabb? "Desperate Housewives" has nothing on this soap opera.

3. Just win, baby

Randy "I have no friends" Moss has departed Minnesota--not without a few shots at several Vikings, including quarterback Daunte Culpepper. Oakland's Silver and Black seems like a perfect fit for the game's most feared deep threat receiver. Of course, that's assuming Kerry Collins can get him the ball. And he'd better.

4. He ain't heavy

Indianapolis QB Peyton Manning has enough problems trying to duplicate last year's incredible season and find a way to get past New England without worrying about his brother. But it will be interesting to see how Eli Manning handles the pressure of being the New York Giants' main man. Did we mention how tough the New York media can be?

5. Big Ben's time

Ben Roethlisberger had a great rookie year on the field for the Pittsburgh Steelers and off the field by dating LPGA beauty Natalie Gulbis. We're going to find out quickly if he's the real deal and can handle the pressure.
