Suggs, Reed hit with fines
'Impermissible contact' with officials in Ravens' loss to Lions costs each player $15,000

Defensive end Terrell Suggs and safety Ed Reed were fined $15,000 each by the NFL for making "impermissible contact" with game officials in Sunday's 35-17 loss to the Detroit Lions, the league announced yesterday.

Suggs apologized to his teammates for his actions, but Reed expressed no remorse. But the Ravens' Pro Bowl defenders agreed their anger was triggered by the officiating.

"It was like, 'When is it enough?' " Suggs said. "We can't let them just keep nut and bolting us. We were straight up getting screwed."

When Suggs was ejected with 4 1/2 minutes left in the third quarter, the Ravens had received 12 penalties while the Lions had only two.

Suggs was incensed after he was flagged for a questionable roughing-the-passer penalty. He jumped into the face of referee Mike Carey and apparently bumped his face mask against the bill of Carey's cap. Suggs contends he made no contact.

"It was my own fault," Suggs said. "I put my team at risk, and I apologize to them. My action was very unfortunate for our team. They really needed me out there. I owe my team big. I apologize to them for not upholding our Raven name."

Asked what he said to Carey, Suggs smiled and said, "I don't think I could put that on TV. I was upset, and in short, I asked him why he is calling the game like this? If you are going to call the game close, call the game close on both sides."

Carey said after the game that Suggs "bumped me with malice in his heart."

"I heard that word means he felt like I was going to do something," Suggs said. "You can't throw somebody out because you think they're going to do something to you. First of all, if I was going to do something to you, I would have done it in the first three steps."

Reed was fined for grabbing an official by the shoulder after an extra-point attempt. Special teams player B.J. Ward was mistakenly ejected instead of Reed after attempting to break up an argument involving an official and Lions tight end Casey FitzSimmons.

"Things happened the way they happened," Reed said. "You're not going to go back and say, 'I regret doing this and doing that' because you don't. But at the same time, you have to learn from it."

Reed was upset over FitzSimmons' attempt to cut-block him at his knees.

"I was getting cut, [but] that's the stuff we don't talk about," Reed said. "It's very dangerous. You're rushing full of speed and then somebody is taking out your knee. Where's the protection for the defense?"
