Post David Boston on roids
Boyz, it's not just baseball although it does seem to be much more pervasive in baseball...

Boston facing steroid suspension
Jay Glazer /

For years, curious eyebrows have been raised from players and fans alike regarding the freakish body of Pro Bowl wide receiver David Boston.

Many have long suspected him of bulking up his massive frame with the use of anabolic steroids, this despite constant denials from the Dolphins' wideout.

Now it appears such speculation may be true.

FOX NFL Sunday has learned that Boston is currently facing a four-game suspension from the NFL for violating its policy on anabolic steroids. Boston is now in the appeals portion of the process. Should he drop or lose the appeal, he will not only be suspended immediately, but he will also lend credence to years of questioning by teammates, opponents, coaches and fans.

Possibly worsening the situation, if Boston does not drop his appeal or receive a ruling by this week, Boston's suspension will roll into next year.

Players close to Boston say he and the Dolphins have known about the impending suspension for quite some time.

He is currently on injured reserve after rupturing his patellar tendon during a practice at Houston in early August. The injury required him to have surgery on Aug. 9 and it shelved him for the year. He was acquired this off-season in a trade with the Chargers that sent a sixth-round pick in the 2005 draft.

The NFL's public relations chief Greg Aiello said the league would not comment.

News of Boston's impending suspension ? barring an appeal ? comes during a week when several high-profile members of the sports world long suspected of using the illegal muscle enhancement drugs were either outed or strongly implicated in the largest steroid scandal in American history.

Olympic track star Marion Jones was the center of much discussion in a 20/20 interview this week with BALCO kingpin Victor Conte, who stated Jones took human growth hormone (HGH) and other steroids. Yankees slugger Jason Giambi has been resoundingly ostracized in New York for admitting such drug use and Giants star Barry Bonds admitted to unknowingly using.

The Boston possible suspension paints a strong picture of the difference between Major League Baseball and the NFL. Baseball and its players union have done very little to prevent cheating. The NFL continues to adhere to the strictest program in sports, even testing players out for the season with injuries.

The Dolphins, already mired by the entire Ricky Williams affair, could actually be helped by this looming suspension. The team was paying him for doing nothing this year but such a suspension would likely allow them to seek a refund of some kind.

If the team wants him to play for them next season, they may ask him to push to immediately drop his appeal in order to serve four games this season. While he's on IR and doesn't play anyway, the suspension would dock him four weeks pay.

Boston's best season came in 2001 when he hauled in 98 passes for 1,598 yards and eight touchdowns. The season before, he had 1,156 yards receiving. Last year, in a controversy-filled season with the Chargers, he had 70 catches for 880 yards and seven scores. Despite solid numbers he had run-in after run-in with coach Marty Schottenheimer.

A couple of years ago, Boston was the feature of a national interview where he said his 260-pound frame was built by a ridiculous number of daily supplements and personal trainers.

While in San Diego, Boston often clashed with the team regarding his playing weight and workout program. But after leaving the Chargers, Boston showed up to the Dolphins at a much slimmer 228 pounds.
