Reader Ramblings (lions fantasy)
Thanks to everyone who wrote, and while we can't address everything, here are some of the more pertinent and interesting questions this week.
This year with all the talent on the Detroit Lions, how are you supposed to know who to draft and who to stay away from? Look at these names: Kevin Jones, Roy Williams, Mike Williams, Charles Rogers, Joey Harrington, Jeff Garcia and Marcus Pollard. --Brandon S.
Kevin Jones should emerge again as Detroit's top fantasy performer. ?
To make things simpler, look at the RB position first. Kevin Jones has no real competition at the spot, and he ran for 1,133 yards and five TDs last year. Barring injury, he's a really good bet to surpass those numbers, as he wasn't completely healthy last year.
With everyone else, a lot of it comes down to individual talent and past production. Roy Williams is freakishly talented, making all sorts of absurd catches on a regular basis. Add on to that his track record (54 catches, 817 yards and eight TDs in '04), and he should be the next to go off your draft board. Mike Williams and Charles Rogers are both big unknowns in comparison, though each has very impressive talent and should garner consideration in later rounds. Pollard is a nice player, but could get lost in the shuffle a bit. We would draft him at the right spot -- somewhere in the later rounds.
As for the quarterbacks, Harrington is the starter, and in our opinion, he has a chance to be a very good QB. But will Mooch (Lions coach Steve Mariucci) agree with us? He's worked with Garcia before and is very comfortable with him, so he would have no problem making the switch. If you want to gamble and draft Harrington, make sure you watch the situation closely and be prepared to snatch up Garcia if he gets promoted.
