Tigers extend Leyland, Dombrowski

Detroit, MI — The Detroit Tigers have announced contract extensions for manager Jim Leyland and general manager Dave Dombrowski.

Leyland agreed to a deal through the 2012 season, while Dombrowski worked out a four-year extension through the 2015 campaign.

"Dave has built a solid foundation for this organization and assembled competitive teams that give us a chance to win year in and year out," said Tigers owner Mike Ilitch. "We have a lot of confidence in his continued leadership of the Detroit Tigers."

Regarding Leyland, Ilitch added, "I know Jim shares our desire to deliver a winner. We're pleased to have him continue leading the Detroit Tigers on the field."

Leyland is in his sixth season as manager of the Tigers and has compiled a record of 485-442 with a World Series appearance in 2006. The Tigers are currently in first place in the American League Central this season with a record of 61-53, four games ahead of the Cleveland Indians.

"We're delighted Jim will continue as Tigers manager through the 2012 season," said Dombrowski. "He has led the Tigers to a World Series, and guided a contending team on a consistent basis during his tenure as manager. Jim's managerial record and accomplishments speak for themselves."

Leyland is in his 20th season as a major league manager. He has also skippered the Pirates, Marlins and Rockies, winning a World Series title with Florida in 1997.

Dombrowski, who was the GM of the Marlins' first World Series title team with Leyland at the helm, is in his 10th season with the Tigers. He was named the team's president and chief executive on November 5, 2001 before adding the title of general manager the following spring.

"I am grateful for the continued opportunity Mr. Ilitch has given me to run this franchise, and I am equally appreciative of the unwavering support he has demonstrated the past ten seasons in our efforts to bring a World Championship back to Detroit," Dombrowski remarked.

The Tigers also extended the contract of assistant GM Al Avila.

I know I was really hoping for Randy Smith and Alan Trammell. I'm sick of competeing for AL Central titles and actually winning a pennant. Let's go back to 100+ loses and compete for worse team in league history again.

You don't know that that extreme scenario would have happened.

Maybe, but I do know the extreme that happened when Dombrowski and Leyland took over.

I applaud the contract extensions but just wanted to point out that Trammell was hired by Dombrowski. While Trammell wasnt a great manager, I respect the job he did for the Tigers managing the worst roster in team history and getting them to at least respectability. He wasnt the right manager for the next step but he did a good job while he was here.

LOL. I thought you were angling for my comments on Leyland.

As for Dumbrowski, I never said that all his trades are garbage.

Tigers have won 10 games in a row, first time the club has accomplished this feat since 1968. Hopefully this is a good omen!

Where did you get that info? It's wrong. They went 10-0 a few times in 84. Twice in the 35-5 start alone.

Thought I heard it right but went to find it in print. I thought it was strange with the 35-5 start in "84 but read the second paragraph, longest streak since Sept of "68:

It appears they are peaking at the right time.
