Tigers sign Prince Fielder to nine-year, $214 million deal

The Detroit Tigers stunned the baseball world Tuesday by reaching agreement with Prince Fielder on a nine-year, $214 million contract, the fourth-largest deal in baseball history.

The deal was first reported by Yahoo Sports.

The Tigers, who learned last week that they would be without designated hitter Victor Martinez for the 2012 season because of a torn knee ligament, replaced him in lavish fashion by luring one of the game's top sluggers to Detroit. It's unknown whether Fielder will play first base or DH since All-Star Miguel Cabrera is entrenched at first. They could share time at both positions, but Cabrera is a former third baseman.

The deal was orchestrated quickly, and likely with owner Mike Illitch heavily involved. General Manager Dave Dombrowski said last week on a conference call that they wouldn't be involved in the bidding for Fielder.

Earlier Tuesday, the Texas Rangers, one of Fielder's top suitors, indicated they were out of the bidding for the three-time All-Star.

Fielder follows in the footsteps of his father, Cecil, who played seven years for the Tigers in 1990-1996 and hit 51 home runs for them in 1990. Prince even hit an upper-deck homer at the old Tigers Stadium as a 12-year-old hanging out with his dad.

Fielder, who was also being courted by the Washington Nationals and Texas Rangers, has averaged 37 homers and 106 RBI the last six years with the Milwaukee Brewers.

For the past few seasons, Fielder and Ryan Braun created perhaps the game's most daunting left-right combo in the middle of an order. Now, he has exchanged Braun for Cabrera, who has averaged 35 homers, 115 RBI and a .974 OPS in four seasons with the Tigers.

What's more, the Tigers will pay more than $44 million through 2015 for both Fielder and Cabrera.

Barring a trade, they will add Martinez to the mix in 2013, and Cabrera may be forced to move back to third base or, perhaps, the outfield.

Dammit man I was giving her all I got...lol. If I could type faster there wouldn't have been 2 threads but who cares.
I was so excited I had to call both of my brothers at work and tell them.

What do you think they are up to. Giving up on the Cuban kid?

Ha, I could have beat both of you since I heard the initial reports over an hour ago, but I was waiting for confirmation. I was listening to 97.1 and both Valenti and Foster thought it was a joke at first. They even thought that a sportwriter's twitter account had gotten hacked. Turns out it was correct all along. Good move by the Tigers IMO. Miggy and Prince will be the best 1-2 punch in baseball.

WoooooHooooooo

This is completely out of nowhere and totally unexpected, at least to me it is.

I'll worry about the defense later.

The Tigers now have three of the best players in MLB in Verlander, Cabrera and now Fielder that are in their prime and playing for them.

And I beat you all. Sort of.

Now we just need to trade for Prince Fielder. LOL.

I was replying to our just having acquired Delman Young - Dimitri's son.

Its just too bad the defense will be so atrocious.

Miggy at 3B = awful
Peralta at SS = average at best
Raburn at 2B = horrendous

Worst defensive infield in baseball and quite possibly the most power at the plate lol

Mr I is going all in, that's for sure. Now trade that liability in Young for a 2B and sign Cespedes to man LF

This is a completely irresponsible move. The Tigers are now slightly better than they would have been with a healthy VMART and again should easily win the division. Money would have been better spend at 2b/3b where there are big holes. Anyone that believes Cabrera can play 3b for more than interleague or potentially in a world series is insulting their own intelligence level. Big gamble. If Dombrowski had known they had 214 million to spend this offseason he would have spent it much more intelligently in a way to keep some structure heading into the future. This is a knee jerk Ilitch move to what should be no more than a 6 month injury for Victor Martinez that will handicap the team into the future.

Miggy can't play 3rd. We tried that a few times and it never worked. I don't know if he put on weight, or what the problem was, but he sucked st 3rd here.

I hate this signing. I would rather have gotten a good glove and a decent bat to play 2nd, or 3rd base, signed a relief pitcher, and called it an offseason.

All i know is Dombrowski knows a heck of a lot more about baseball than I do, so if he signed Prince, ill trust him. Regardless, I like the signing.
