Post Look at what we had.
Once upon a time we had a Cy Young Starting Pitching staff. Price, Verlander, and Scherzer had won back to back to back Cy Youngs. And now this year, Scherzer wins his 2nd Cy Young in the NL. And Rick Porcello won his 1st Cy Young in the AL.

The only pitcher from that rotation that has never, nor will ever, won a Cy Young is Annabel Suckass.

The Tigers invested heavily in pitching in the draft - good move. It would be nice to have all of them still on the roster but that is not economically feasible.

Sanchez did win the era title during that time though. I remember that game where he had 17Ks. Dude was dealing.

i feel like ilitch painted them into a bad corner with scherzer. story is that scherzer had agreed in principle to a deal before his final season with the tigers but then the next day came back and said he wanted more money but ilitch took it personally and decided he didnt want max anymore also felt max was being too greedy.
of course max was lights out in 2014, earned the deal he wanted from ilitch from somewhere else and the tigers went into 2015 without him. After that epic fail, in the offseason they throw Scherzer money ($30m/year) at Pelfrey ($8m/yr) and Zimmerman ($22m/year). Granted they arent on the hook as long for Zimmerman, but Scherzer deferred money deal actually projects to being quite a bit less in todays world since his payments are deferred out until 2028 without interest. bad bad franchise altering move by mike ilitch.

it seems now that mike ilitch is no longer making the decisions for the tigers and has been either overruled or supplanted by his children. tigers seem like they are in a spot right now where they would be better off doubling down on there previous ways but instead will try to backtrack and slowly offload contracts. tough sledding for al avila.

I think one of the mistakes the Tigers made that isnt talked about much is that the Tigers developed two good young infielders in Hernan Perez and Eugenio Suarez and then let them go for pennies on the dollar. Both were young, cheap, under team control and are now starters at the MLB level. Tigers front office got so caught up in the here and now that they flat out cut Perez which was absolutely irresponsible and let Suarez go in a trade for a one year rental on Alfredo Simon. I ll never understand that Simon deal, the Tigers were dealing big money then - they could ve easily signed someone of SImons caliber in free agency for money only and held onto there prospects. Letting go of players like Perez and Suarez who easily projected as contributors on the cheap for years to come is how you end up the fiscally irresponsible mess that Avila has to deal with now. Looking back the Tigers tried to solve there issues with money way too many times at the expense of youth and roster flexibility.
