i think guidi's article is on if he were talking about defense rather than speed. As for CF we need someone who can play good defense and hit better. he requires just 240 from the CF, Logan and granderson could do that. The team isnt winning for many reasons.
a) Trammell is a bad manager. He overmanages to an extreme on a day to day basis. His rest day scheduling is disruptive. On sundays he will rest 4-5 starters and we have almost no chance. Additionally during the week he throws in random rest days for other guys like white, young, guillen, shelton, monroe and even polanco. He doesnt put his lineup on the field consistently and no wonder they dont hit consistently. Inge had found himself as a leadoff hitter and his dropoff has coincided with Trammell shuffling him all over the lineup since we got polanco.
b) Defense- Guillen is inadequate at SS this season. His range is terrible and his knee problems make his arm strength look adequate at best. Inge is very error prone at 3b and shelton has been okay at 1st but leaves a bit to be desired. DYoung and RWhite should never play the OF. CMonroe should never play CF at home, he should only be used there in a pinch. Logan has been great in CF on defense but they seem to be shutting him out for playing time. Ordonez is a good OF still learning Comerica, it would be wrong to relegate him to DH in favor of Monroe who is an inferior defender with a less accurate arm.
c) Odd trades and odd lack of trades- I like Polanco who has been playing well individually but the trade has been disruptive. Percival has turned out to be a bad signing but Urbina was a savior in a ways bc he was still a solid closer. Trading him meant a couple more losses with Percival at the back end and subsequently forced them to use Farnsworth to close - had a better chance to keep him before he showed he could finish games. Weird that they traded Urbina/Farnsworth to teams that didnt need closers, seems they could have gotten more had they sent them to teams who needed them in more important roles. Polanco addition also wiped out the role of Omar Infante who has come out of his slump since Placido arrived. Why do we still have DYoung, RWhite, JJohnson? Granderson and Maroth would have been a good deal for Burnett but we turned it down. The Tigers are done for this year they need to get the young guys up and start priming them for next year. We should see Zumaya, baugh, verlander pitching. Thames and Pena also deserve a final look before the end of the year.
