BLOOMFIELD HILLS, Mich. -- Detroit Tigers designated hitter Dmitri Young did not appear at a scheduled court hearing to face a domestic violence charge Tuesday, leading a judge to require his lawyer to provide documentation of the player's whereabouts by the end of the day.

Young was accused of choking a 21-year-old woman on April 14 at the Townsend Hotel in suburban Detroit. If convicted of the misdemeanor charge, the 32-year-old Young could face up to 93 days in jail and a $500 fine.

William Swor, Young's lawyer, faxed the court of Judge Diane D'Agostini on Monday asking that the pretrial hearing be delayed because Swor was scheduled to be in federal court in Miami on Tuesday for a different case.

D'Agostini rejected the request, and neither Young nor Swor were present in court on Tuesday morning.

Assistant Oakland County prosecutor Tare Wigod said Swor told him that Young had a medical emergency and was out of state. D'Agostini ordered proof by the end of the day that Young was housed at a legitimate medical facility. She also ordered Swor to appear in her courtroom on Friday.

There was no immediate comment Tuesday from Swor or Adam Katz, Young's agent.

Young, who was placed on the disabled list last month with an irritation of a strain in his right quadriceps, is hitting .169 in 59 at-bats with four RBI this season.

He is in his 11th major league season and fifth with Detroit.
