I'm not sold on Eric Berry. He only had 2 picks this year and 1 FF. You can explain away a "shut down" CB's low interception numbers because they don't throw to his side of the field, but a Safety who is supposed to be rangy and help over the top it's a little bit of a stretch. I don't know what it is but I just have doubts about taking a safety that high. He could be a CB depending on how he times out at the combine.
I did a little research and looked at the past 7 drafts and where the first DB and DT's were taken
09-
#9 DT B.J. Raji
#14 CB Malcolm Jenkins
08-
#5 DT Glenn Dorsey
#11 CB Leodis McKelvin
07-
#6 S LaRon Landry
#10 DT Amobi Okoye
06-
#7 S Michael Huff
#12 DT Haloti Ngata
05-
#6 CB Pacman Jones
#16 DT Travis Johnson
04-
#5 S Sean Taylor
#14 DT Tommie Harris
03-
#4 DT Dewayne Robertson
#5 CB Terrance Newman
Of the Safeties taken two were taken by Washington and the other has been a bust. I agree that Taylor and Landry were a dynamic duo but now you look at their offensive and defensive lines and they are aged and crumbling because they went for the sexy appeal of the safeties. I just can't see doing that with the problems up front.
Here is the Lions depth chart:
DE: Jason Hunter, Cliff Avril
DT: Grady Jackson, Landon Cohen
DT: Sammie Hill, Andre Fluellen, Joe Cohen
DE: DeWayne White, Turk McBride
The only two who are worth keeping around are Hill and Hunter. Everyone else are just bums. Even if you keep those two they are easily bumped from their starting role.
You gotta draft the trenches first. The reason the Lions opponent QB's always have career days against them is because there is no pass rush whatsoever. The defensive backfield can only cover for so long until something breaks down. With no pass rush the QB can just stand back there and pick apart the defense. Having a push up the middle puts more time and pressure on the QB and can cover up holes in the secondary a lot easier.

There are too many holes to draft a safety when we've already got one good safety in Delmas. It has been a revolving door at the other safety position opposite Delmas this year because of injury so it's hard gauge what we really have there. Ko Simpson was playing ok, Bullocks will be back, hell, even Marquand Manuel played some good football (ok, decent).
Trading down is most definitely my first choice for the Lions this year. Assuming their position stays the same there really isn't a player at a position of need in this draft that would provide the type of value and be worth the investment. Here is a list of the players drafted from 4-10 this year and the amount of their salaries:
4. Seattle - LB, Aaron Curry, Wake Forest - Signed (6-years, $60M; $34M guaranteed) 5. NY Jets (fr. CLE) - QB, Mark Sanchez, USC - Signed (5-years; $50.5M real/$60M max; $28M guaranteed) 6. Cincinnati - OT, Andre Smith, Alabama - Signed (4-years, $26M; $21M guaranteed) 7. Oakland - WR, Darrius Heyward-Bey, Maryland - Signed (5-years, $38.25M real/$54M max; $23.5M guaranteed) 8. Jacksonville - OT, Eugene Monroe, Virginia - Signed (5-years, $35.4M; $19.2M guaranteed) 9. Green Bay - DT, B.J. Raji, Boston College - Signed (5-years, $28.5M; $17.7M guaranteed) 10. San Francisco - WR, Michael Crabtree, Texas Tech - Signed (6-years, $32M; $17M guaranteed)
If we don't trade down we're looking at about $35 million guaranteed. If we do we can maybe get that under $20 which is much more manageable. The offensive and defensive lines need to be addressed much more desperately then the second safety spot.
Suh won't be there at 4. If he is, you run your draft card up the second after the team at #3 announces their selection. Gerald McCoy is the only other option. Okung is viewed as the top tackle before the combine but I'm not totally sold on taking him at 4. Those are the options that I see in front of the Lions. They need one of those 3 guys but I can't see Suh dropping to them but I don't want to overpay for McCoy. Okung, the jury is still out on.
Fontes, I'm with you on trading down. Hoping the opportunity presents itself. I'm thinking the Lions might be in a prime position. If someone is wanting one of those QBs. This years draft is well stocked with defensive talent.

I still think Seattle is our most likely trade down partner, if not for a QB then for a LT.
If we stay at #4 I don't think any of the teams ahead of us will take Okung. With Walter Jones getting hurt every year, Seattle needs a new LT. As I mentioned in an earlier post, Hasselbeck is getting old and they need a young guy to study under him and eventually replace him.
St. Louis and possibly Cleveland will take a QB so the one Seattle wanted might not be there. However, if they stay behind teams like Washington and Buffalo in the draft order, the top LT will be off the board. That leaves us as the most likely trading partner. I'd move down to their spot and only take their second rounder for it.

I just hope that the Lions pick one spot ahead of the Redskins. They will certainly have a new coach next year who will probably want his own QB, and Snyder has already begun scouting Clausen and McCoy. Anybody behind them who wants a QB may be willing to trade up to the Lions' spot because of it. While Seattle is a possibility, Buffalo will have a new coach who will probably want his own QB too, so I think they might be more likely to pull the trigger.

Best solution in that instance, we offer to trade with the redskins that 1 spot so they can have their Qb for the mere price of their 2nd round pick.

Remember though, the Lions would have to be at least 2 spots ahead of WA, and someone in between would have to be a team that is likely to draft a QB. Just sayin....

Touchdown Jesus, that isn't exactly true. Remember when the Lions traded back with the Browns one spot so they could draft Kellen Winslow? Cleveland either thought the Lions were going to draft him or else the Lions had another trade lined up. It's obvious that the Lions aren't going to take a QB this year, but they could tell Washington that they have a deal in place with either Seattle or Buffalo and ask them to beat it. While it's not very likely, it's not impossible, and it has happened before.

That's true. I didn't think of that. Good point.

The Lions did have another trade lined up. Jacksonville wanted to trade up, and supposedly had a deal in place with Detroit to give up their second rounder to move up and get Roy Williams. However, in a lone move of intelligence, Millen never let on who the Jags were interested in. The Browns were given the impression the Jags wanted Winslow. The price was their second rounder, take it or leave it.

I think that our best shot to trade down will come with Seatle. Seatle needs a QB to groom. If Locker declares he could very well be the best available and is a very popular player out that way. We could probably pick up their second.

ESPN wrote: Locker to return for senior season By Ted Miller ESPN.com
Washington Huskies quarterback Jake Locker announced Monday that he will return for his senior season instead of entering the NFL draft, despite most projections slotting him as an early first-round selection.
"After a great deal of careful thought and deliberation, I have decided to return to Washington and play my senior year," Locker said in a statement. "I am very excited about this team's opportunities and potential for the upcoming season and I am looking forward to being a part of it."
With Locker back, the Huskies should be a bowl threat in what figures to be a deep Pac-10 in 2010. They are expected to welcome back nine starters on offense and eight on defense as well as both specialists.
Entering the 2009 season, the big question with Locker was how he would adapt to new coach Steve Sarkisian's pro-style offensive scheme. Locker ran a spread-option offense his first two seasons as the Huskies' starter, though the second season ended after four games when he injured his thumb.
Those questions were answered early when the Huskies, 0-12 in 2008, started 2-1 and earned a national ranking, narrowly losing to LSU and beating then-No. 3 USC.
Locker completed 58 percent of his passes for 2,800 yards -- the third-highest single-season passing total in UW history -- with 21 touchdowns and 11 interceptions. He also rushed for 388 yards and seven touchdowns
With Locker in charge, the Huskies completed one of the nation's best turnarounds, finishing 5-7, just a win short of bowl eligibility.
Locker, a native of Ferndale, Wash., ranks sixth on the Washington career list with 5,374 career yards. He also is just two yards shy of Marques Tuiasosopo's record as the program's all-time leading rusher at quarterback.
Locker also signed a contract last summer with the Los Angeles Angels -- he's no longer on scholarship and is paying his own way at Washington -- though he repeatedly has insisted that football is his first choice.
I don't know if this will help or hurt the Lions' chances of trading down. If the Rams and Brown select Clausen and Bradford ahead of the Lions, it will probably hurt, but if one of them fall, it could help.

There's been discussions of trading down in several threads, but I'm going to attempt to have them consolidated here. I know it's not likely to happen, but atleast I tried.
There's been a lot of talk in Tampa Bay from the fans and media about the Bucs trading up to get Suh. While I don't consider that likely since teams seldom trade up into the top 5 for a position other than QB, it's not impossible. The problem as I see it is the Rams may strongly consider making that trade with the Bucs themselves. They know that Tampa and Detroit won't take a QB since both teams drafted the position last year and they could still get their QB of choice at #3. Of course, the Lions could always trade their pick to a team needing a QB in that instance and their plan would backfire on them. The question then becomes, are the Rams willing to take that chance?
If the Bucs offered to move up one spot with the Lions to get Suh, I'd probably make that deal for their own (or Cleveland's) 2nd round pick. As M2K said in another thread, the Lions could then field offers from Seattle, Buffalo, and any other team that needs a QB to jump ahead of Washington. I know that a double trade down is very unlikely, but it's not impossible. I think Cleveland did it three times last year from #5 all the way down to #21.

Do I remember correctly that Tampa was stockpiling picks last offseason?
