Post Re: Lions Predictions
Well that's why they play the game. I'm guessing it's because we're all anxious for the season but I never understood predicting actual records in May because A. We don't have a team yet and niether does anyone else. B.people are compelled to make judgement based off last season when recent history has shown that last season has very little to do with the future. C.Injuries will happen and they can hurt us and help us(G.B.'s line gets Aaron Rodgers killed, we win two additional games). D. I'm just bitter because everyone always predicts bad things for us.

on an unrelated note, I was watching video on our defense(mainly for Delmas highlites) last season and Anthony Henry was the second coming of Travis Fisher. Will James missed almost every tackle when he got squared up and Dewayne White was'nt making any plays EVEN WHEN LEFT UNBLOCKED. We did a good job at addressing these issues so far.

Post Re: Lions Predictions
I agree trying to predict this early is crazy. Though being a lions fan I am already crazy. So here are my predictions. Prepare to laugh at me…

Suh-4.5 Sacks (had 3.5 but just had to change it), 1 FF (on Adrian Peterson), 1 blocked kick, 7 tackles for losses
Delmas-4 Int, 1 sack, 10 PD, 2 FF
Spievey-1 Int, 4 penalties for pass interference
Best -940 rushing yards, 350 receiving yards and a combine of 9 TD’s
Smith-300 yards, 150 Receiving yards
Stafford-3600 Yards passing, 27 TD, 25 Int-I think Stafford is going to be a gunslinger unfortunately
Johnson-1300 yards 9 TD
Brown-150 Yards Rushing, 550 Receiving-I think we are going to use him more like Reggie Bush this year and move him and best around a lot.
I can’t explain it either but I just have this weird feeling that Toone is going to make the team and become our slot/PR/KR. And that he will do decent.

My prediction right now for the team is 6-10. Though I am sure I will change it before the start of the year.

ESPN's John Clayton made the comment in a recent chat that he predicts a big improvement out of the Lions but it would not show up in the win/loss column this season. But next year, with a similar offseason, he then sees them making the big jump to play-off caliber team.

We've been making big strides these past two offseasons. One or two more of them and we have one heck of a good young squad.

If that's all we have from the running game, we're going to be hurting. 1400 yards or so is awful for an entire team.

BTW - MoMo should have a 150 yards rushing or better and probably 100 yards rec'ing.

or a man who does not give 2 craps about predictions. But yes, I have a lot of faith in our players and the staff. I do think Follett will be a nice asset which no one will see coming. I do think that Suh and the D-line will be the best we've seen it in 10 years. And I do think we will have a pretty potent offense (good for 23-27 pts a game). If we get Atogwe, that would be even better.

Go ahead and call it kool-aid but I like our roster at the moment. Our secondary is a huge liability but Courtland Finnigan became a marquee player when he played behind a defense that bothered QBs. Delmas has shown that he can be one of the best safetys in the NFL very soon, Avril, Hunter, Speivey, and Follett are players that no one will gameplan for(you can include Young and whoever plays at the other safety spot as well). I think we should have gone 5-11 last year. We also have a pretty solid backup QB now and not a fat turd loser. Expectations are very low but on paper, this roster has the most potential I've seen in a long time.

Either way, we will be a very worthy opponent by the 2011-2012 season.

BTW, have any of you ever had cornbread and Kool-aid? That sh!t is delicious.

i'm just so pumped for the season to begin

What you've pointed out about our defense is probably what gives me most hope this next season. If the young unproven players with a lot of potential, (i.e. Follett, Avril, Speivey) can produce and the young players who have already proven they can be solid starters, (i.e. Delmas, Levy) can keep on producing and the veterans (i.e. Peterson, Vandon Bosch) can lead and mentor the young players, then we could have one heck of a good defense. Our line should be the best it's been in a long time with the additions of Suh and Vanden Bosch and Corey Williams added to the progression of Sammie Hill and Cliff Avril. Our linebackers should be solid with the beast of Levy in the center and Peterson on one side with a yet to be determined player, (i hope it's follett) on the other side. (that may be the most interesting training camp battle) And the question mark lies in the secondary. Can Delmas continue to play the way he played last year? Can Speivey start and play at a high level? Who the heck is going to be our second safety? So many questions about the secondary. But if we can get that sorted out, than i don't think 10 - 6 is completely insane to ask for, maybe a big reach, but not insanity.

I'd still probably say 6-7 wins, maybe 8 if our secondary remains solid. But who knows; I think this season is going to be one of the most unpredictable ones in Lions history. So many things could happen. So many players COULD step up and be big. And several players could also be flops.

We'll see. But I'm for sure stoked about our team.

Rich Gannon is a co-host of one of the Sirius NFL Radio shows now. ( Yes, THAT Rich Gannon - QB Raiders and Vikings).

Anyway, he was asked, "Out of the 5 Bottom feeder teams from last year, what team will have the biggest turn around?"

His answer was an immediate, " I don't even have to think about this one. The Detroit Lions will be vastly improved!" ( Paraphrased )

He was also asked about a week ago which of the young QB's would have the biggest improvement this season?
His choices were: Flacco, Sanchez, Ryan, Freeman, and Stafford.

His answer ( paraphrased), " I think Matt Stafford is going to have an outstanding year."

Post Re: Lions Predictions
The Lions have come a very long way in just 2 off seasons.

If I hadn't seen all the changes this team has encountered, I wouldn't have believed it.

The Lions have been able to rebuild primarily through the draft with, Arguably, the BPA at each draft pick. And fortunately, the BPA's have all been at positions of DIRE need.

Well, the DIRE needs are quickly disappearing from the Lions.

It appears as if the DIRE needs and the BPA's will align again next draft. Until someone steps up and settles the position, it is a DIRE need.

CB is still a Dire need. We need a starter and a 3rd CB. Spievey is a rookie and I am not yet comfortable counting on him. 3rd CB's have traditionally flopped in Detroit.

S is still a DIRE need opposite Delmas. I hope that Josh Bullochs will finally shake off the injury bug and take control of the SS position. But, given his injury history, can we count on him long term? I don't think so.

Return Specialist: Maybe the MOST IMPORTANT of our DIRE needs. No matter how bad a team is, if they have a Mel Gray/Eddie Drummond type return ace, they are always in the game right to the very end. If we can just find the next Mel Gray, and can't fill any other position, we will make the playoffs with what we already have on the roster. I hope Toon is the next Mel Gray.

Will LB: We have candidates to take the job. But, unless either Follett or Campbell take control of the job, it is a DIRE need.

For a team that just 2 seasons ago was win less and absolutely devoid of any talent except Calvin Johnson, to only have 4 DIRE needs going into this season is nothing short of AMAZING.
Even more AMAZING, is that 2 of the 4 DIRE needs may already be filled. Will LB and Return Specialist.

I am not saying that those are the only needs. We still need to continue upgrading in several areas, not the least of which is the Offensive Line. And we will always be wanting to upgrade the depth in all areas.

But, the 4 positions listed above are the only remaining positions that are absolutely necessary that we upgrade immediately.

As such, I still stand by my 9-7 and just miss out on the playoffs due to tie breakers prediction.

Opinion question for everybody. I got so disgusted with the lions a few years ago, I cancelled my Sunday ticket. It was a lot of money to just get mad and quit watching after half time.
Is it time? Are they good enough to bring back the package?
I am kinda thinking they are, but I can be shoved either way. This data collection for the holder of the checkbook.

If nothing else... there is at least hope. I would say you'll be disappointed more than thrilled, but a lot less than in recent years.

I'm sort of in the same boat, devildog. I've had Sunday Ticket for the past 5+ years and each year I debate on whether to get it or not. Well, it's about that time again and of course I want to watch my Lions, but do I spend all that $$$ just to be disappointed again and again? Or are they really ready to start making some strides?
