Brett Favre inactive, NFL record streak ends

Brett Favre is inactive for the Vikings’ Monday night game against the Giants, bringing to an end his NFL-record streak of 297 consecutive starts.

Favre suffered a shoulder injury eight days ago when he was hit by Bills linebacker Arthur Moats, and he’s not ready to return. Although the Vikings were still holding out hope today that he could play, Favre’s shoulder was hurting badly enough that he never even took the field for pregame warmups.

Favre’s streak began in 1992, when he replaced an injured Don Majkowski for the Green Bay Packers. He kept playing every week for seven years until he had surpassed Ron Jaworski’s record for consecutive starts by a quarterback, then kept playing every week for another decade until he had surpassed Jim Marshall’s record for the most consecutive starts by any player at any position. He kept playing every week in Green Bay, in New York and in Minnesota. Until now.

Tarvaris Jackson will start for the Vikings tonight against the Giants.

The question now is whether Favre’s NFL career has come to an end. It’s possible that Favre’s shoulder will continue to bother him for the next three weeks, and that he won’t be able to return this season. Favre insists that he’s retiring after this season, and that unlike his past retirement announcements, he really means it this time.

Official Vikings inactive list likely headed to Canton

Giants spokesman Pat Hanlon has posted on Twitter a picture of the historic inactive list that contains, for the first time in 298 games, the name Brett Favre.

We assume that the official list will end up in Canton, unless Hanlon puts the thing on eBay.

Also out for the Vikings? Receiver Percy Harvin, receiver Hank Baskett, safety Tyrell Johnson, cornerback Chris Cook, guard Steve Hutchinson, defensive tackle Fred Evans, and defensive end Ray Edwards.

The list doesn’t state that Favre is the third quarterback. If he is, he technically could start — the consequence would be that neither Tarvaris Jackson nor Joe Webb could play. Even in Favre’s world of high drama, that would be simply too dramatic.

UPDATE: Tom Pelissero of 1500ESPN.com tells us that Favre isn’t the third quarterback, which means that he won’t play at all.

Another famous streak ends in Detroit

Wonder if Brett Favre, today, considers himself the luckiest man on the face of the earth?

The Vikings quarterback sat out Monday night's Vikings-Giants game at Ford Field, putting the kabosh on his record streak of 297 starts.

Interestingly, 71 years ago, another famous streak — the most famous in sports — ended in Detroit, too, when Lou Gehrig took himself out of the Yankees lineup before the start of a series at what then was Briggs Stadium.

The story goes that on May 2, 1939, Gehrig met with his manager, Joe McCarthy, in the lobby of the Book Cadillac hotel and asked to be taken out of that day's lineup, ending his streak of 2,130 — which lasted until Cal Ripken broke it in 1995.

A month later, Gehrig was diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (which is now better known as Lou Gehrig's Disease) and in July 1939 he delivered his famous speech at Yankee Stadium.

He died June 2, 1941.

That's too bad, I was hoping he'd be able to play so SUH could knock him out of the NFL for good. He's been such a primadonna the last few years, that I can't stand him anymore. I used to strongly dislike him for what he would do to my lions regularly. Now I dislike him for character issues too!

He really needs to fade away into obscurity.

Hopefully, the douche will retire now. But, I'm sure we'll still get Favre-Watch from ESPN and the NFL Network in 2011, 2012, 2013.....

You know that when he is done playing, he will get a TV pregame show spot.
