How is that less awesome?
Because having pick #39 is better than pick #44 overall.
So what this boils down to is this, as of right now the Lions will have picks;
13,44,75,106,137 and I believe around 185 (6th rounder from Philly as part of the Ernie Sims trade. Our original 6th rounder was traded to Seattle, for Lawrence Jackson. I think it was well worth it.)
Depending on how bad his knee is, I wouldn't mind seeing the Lions take Bruce Carter in round one, then look at Jimmy Smith or Curtis Brown in round two. If Carter's knee is too questionable, Akeem Ayers would be OK. I am assuming Brandon Harris is staying at Miami, since he indicated that's what he was leaning towards doing. If Harris declares and they land him, they can look at Quan Sturdivant or Martez Wilson.
Round three I would consider looking at offensive line, a slot receiver, or maybe another DE. However, I am kind of pleased with our DE situation. I don't think KVB is done playing yet, Avril had a pretty good year, McBride and Jackson had pretty decent years in platoon roles and we still have a promising player in Willie Young on the roster. I wouldn't be upset if they took a DE, even in round one, if a stud falls to them. But I don't think it's a glaring need like it was at this time last year.
