The opponents are known early in the year as teams play their own conference foes twice and then a division in each of the conferences. In summer, the actual schedule comes out.

I don't pay much attn to SOS in the NFL. Teams are so up and down from one year to another it doesn't matter.

Chicago will count twice as an 11-win team from last year but I don't see them as an 11-win team. Knock them down to an 8-8 team and the Lions have a middle of the road SOS.

SOS might be somewhat overrated, but it sucks to be down team like Carolina or Buffalo when you've got 2-3 strong teams in your division.

How on Earth do we seem to get one of the hardest schedules every stinking year? It has been at least 4 years since we last had an easy schedule.

By the end of the year, our schedule won't seem to be so hard. Chicago and Minnesota are going to be sub-500, and KC likely won't be in the playoff hunt any longer. What will make our schedule very tough is meeting the Packers twice, and then having to play Atlanta, New Orleans and San Diego. At least we get two of those at home.

Oakland on the road should be a tough one as well.

Because we play a difficult division. That's what largely dictates strength of schedule. Plus, as others have noted, it's kind of a misleading stat, because a team's production one year does not necessarily dictate how good they will be the next year.
