I'm not sure how I feel about Broyles wearing 84... That kind of bothers me a bit... He's got big shoes to fill in that #.

I agree. That doesn't seem right.

#84 should have been reserved if not flat out retired.

I agree. Herman was a great person, as well as a great NFL player. His number should be in the rafters.

these are always subject to change

im surprised no one chose 21 yet

i dont believe in retiring jersey #s so i think 84 is perfect for Broyles. especially if he displays the hands he did in college

anyone know Lacey's #?

I thought I remember hearing something about No. 85 being retired because a player long ago died on the field due to a heart attack.

Although I agree that No. 84 should be retired to honor Herman, I'm just glad that Broyles is not wearing a dumbass teen number. I don't care what anyone says wide receivers should NOT have teen numbers. Now, it seems EVERY receiver drafted picks a teen number. Wtf?

I'm with you--WRs should have 80s and RBs should have 20s--like the good ol' days of '91!

Agree.

I do like #11 (nothing to do with Roy), but thats it.

Retired numbers
Dutch Clark (7)
Barry Sanders (20) Note: The #20 was retired specifically for Sanders, even though the retired number was also worn by RB Billy Sims and DB Lem Barney, both of whom are also among the top all-time Lions at their positions.

Bobby Layne (22)
Doak Walker (37)
Joe Schmidt (56) Note: The #56 was unretired with Schmidt's blessing when the Lions acquired linebacker Pat Swilling from the Saints. No player has worn it since Swilling left.

Chuck Hughes (85) Note: Hughes died of a heart attack during a game on October 24, 1971, and his #85 was withdrawn from circulation. However, WR Kevin Johnson wore #85 during his stint in Detroit after asking permission from the Hughes family as he had worn that number throughout his professional career.

Ronnell Lewis #97

He's got a DL number, looks like they plan on him being a DE like Avril.

The player gets to choose his number so it means nothing that he is wearing #97. There are plenty of LBs in the NFL that wear #s in the 90s and DEs that wear 50s.

we should've never retired 20 or any number for that matter.
