Corey Williams was busted for DUI in 2011

In late May, Lions defensive tackle Corey Williams said he’d let the coaches deal with defensive tackle Nick Fairley’s off-field issues. Little did anyone know that Williams already had an off-field issue of his own.

According to MonticelloLive.com, Williams was arrested for DUI in Arkansas on June 18, 2011.

Yes, 2011.

He was in court earlier this week on the 13-month anniversary of the incident, with his lawyer, Rickey Hicks, arguing that police did not have probable cause to stop Williams.

Hicks claims that the decision to pull over Williams, who was driving an F-650, “which is an unusually large Ford pick-up truck, with unusually large wheels and tires,” was racially motivated, given that all persons in the vehicle were African-American.

Williams nevertheless generated a 0.10 percent blood-alcohol concentration on the Breathalyzer.

Judge Ken Harper took the matter under advisement. He is expected to rule within a week.

It’s unknown whether Williams reported the arrest to the team or to the league. If he did, both the team and the league managed to keep the matter quiet for more than a year.

Although the incident happened during the lockout, an August 2011 agreement between the NFL and the NFLPA states that “players arrested during the [lockout] may be considered for entry into the Policy and Program on Substances of Abuse.”
