GAME DAY THREAD: Lions vs. Browns (Preseason Game 1)
Haven't posted one of these threads since the playoffs (yes, we finally made it into the playoffs last year). The preseason kicks off tonight with our annual Lions vs. Browns contest. What do you hope to see out there tonight? Post all your thoughts pre, during and post game in this thread. GO LIONS!

Re: GAME DAY THREAD: Lions vs. Browns (Preseason Game 1)
Here's what I am hoping to see:
First of all, the game itself. I am busy redoing our bedroom (painting, new floors, new mouldings) and am hoping to finish it before game time.
However, in reality what I want to see is the Lions D-line being aggressive, but smart. Keep the attitude, but reduce the penalties and mistakes.
Secondly, I want to see a running game that doesn't cause embarrassment.
Third, I am anxious to see Bentley play corner.
And last, I want to see Stafford stay healthy.

I am interested in seeing if Titus Young plays #2 WR in 2-WR sets (in other words, if he is competing with Burleson for the #2 job). Dave Birkett reported that Burleson will typically play slot in 3-WR sets but I'm curious about which WRs are on the field when the Lions are in 12-personnel.

What do you hope to see out there tonight? I won't be able to see anything, until tomorrow although, NFL Network 'might' show some of the game (a play or 2).

Re: GAME DAY THREAD: Lions vs. Browns (Preseason Game 1)
I think there are a lot of things to look at. In the secondary you wonder if Wendling/Coleman are starting by default or if its bc they have stepped it up. Obviously people want to see Bentley perform well at corner and hope that Lacey is better than A. Smith. A bad performance in the secondary may be more telling than a good one though bc Weeden and the lackluster WRs shouldnt be a challenge for good defenses. At RB, there s not much to look forward to. I hope they keep K Smith down to less than 3 touches for sake of keeping him healthy. If we re looking for another viable runner we might be better off checking out the Browns' runners behind Richardson - Ogbonnaya, Brandon Jackson, Montarrio Hardesty. Maybe one of them will catch Mayhews eye and be available later. If you are keeping an eye out to the next offseason, you may want to closely watch Lewis and Whitehead who have been getting glowing reviews at LB. If they are really that good it saves Mayhew from having to overpay FA starters Durant and Levy. I dont think Gosder Cherilus is in any kind of danger but I ll also be happy to see how Reiff is coming along and curious to see if he takes reps on the right or left side.
I went to one training camp session early on and the one player that kinda surprised me was WR Patrick Edwards - I was thinking, wow Broyles looks pretty good but it wasnt Broyles. It ll be a good problem to have but if that first impression rings true than many may look back at the Broyles pick as being unnecessary although it probably lets you save by eventually nudging Burleson off the cap.

Im curious to see if we have any 4 wr sets. I know Broyles isnt really ready but Edwards seems to be a similar player with some talent. Probably wont see that til 3rd preseason game and more likely at some point in the regular season.

Re: GAME DAY THREAD: Lions vs. Browns (Preseason Game 1)
I just wanna see the game. I'm in DC, and it won't be televised here.
More importantly, I wanna see an injury free game.
I want to see Kellen Moore at QB. I figure it's pre-season, so I should get my wish in the late 3rd or early 4th quarter.
I also want to see Bentley at CB.

You're right--the Lions use 11 and 10 personnel sets a lot so Titus will get a lot of action regardless. I'm just wondering if Young is pushing Burleson, which is something we might see when there are two WRs on the field. While 10 and 11 personnel are used a lot, they're in 12-personnel a lot too, with Scheffler lined up in the slot for a 3-receiver look. In that situation, who lines up wide opposite Calvin? Last year, it was mostly Burleson although Linehan gradually worked Young into that role. This is one of many things I'm looking for over the course of the preseason--it could tell us much about Burleson's future in Detroit beyond 2012.

Other than that, I want to see the D-line play, especially since hearing that Suh looks really good in camp and has learned a few new moves. Interested in seeing our new FB James Bryant and how theyll use him. Also Ryan Broyles, cant wait to see how he does. But again, STAY HEALTHY. This is only preseason.

Very anxious to see how Dwight Bentley plays. Unfortunately he won't have much competition since we're playing the Browns, but we'll still see what he's about.
