Detroit — Lions vice chairman Bill Ford Jr. expects his team to continue improving until it reaches the top of the NFL.
"We're going to bring you a Super Bowl, and we are going to help do our part to continue to mend our city and our state," Ford told a crowd of about 1,000 at the Detroit Economic Club's annual kickoff luncheon for the team, though he didn't put a timeline on his title guarantee.
Lions players and front-office members spent part of their day off sitting among the fans at the luncheon Wednesday afternoon.
The players made a grand entrance down the escalators in Ford Field into the atrium for the luncheon and dispersed to sit among economic club members and guests. A portion of the ticket proceeds from Wednesday's event will benefit Think Detroit PAL, a charity supporting youth football players and cheerleaders.
Ford told the group how excited he was to see the city come alive during last season's Monday night game and expects that to be a glimpse of what would happen when — not if — the Lions win a Super Bowl.
"When the Lions win the Super Bowl, this city will have a party like we've never seen before," Ford said.
Team president Tom Lewand, coach Jim Schwartz and players Matthew Stafford and Stephen Tulloch all addressed the crowd after lunch.
Lewand said the hard-working Lions have become a reflection of the community, making it easy for fans to rally behind the team.
"We don't want to be a one-year wonder," Schwartz said. "We want to be good over a consistent period of time. We want to deliver championships."email@example.com
