Jumping of the gun begins: DeAngelo Hall has not signed in Detroit
Posted by Michael David Smith on March 12, 2013, 4:20 PM EDT

With the new league year underway and millions of NFL fans desperate for any free agency news they can get, expect at least a few reports that jump the gun about a player signing with a new team.

One such report came out of WUSA-9 in Washington, D.C., which said that cornerback DeAngelo Hall, who was just released by the Redskins, had signed with the Lions. In an instant, the original WUSA report had been posted on Twitter so many times that “DeAngelo Hall” was a trending topic across the United States.

One problem: The report was false.

After the Hall-to-Detroit rumor had gone halfway around the world, other reports began to surface saying that Hall had not, in fact, signed with the Lions. Eventually, the Lions posted on their official Twitter account that they haven’t signed Hall.

So DeAngelo Hall is still a free agent. And we have a good reminder that at the start of NFL free agency, you can’t believe everything you hear.

Bills released Fitzpatrick. Does that mean they're open to trading up for a QB?

I'd trade down if both the LTs are gone by the time we pick.

Their GM is a gambler (Mario Williams $100 million contract), so we'd cash out on draft picks if they were to trade up.

Report: Detroit Lions. safety Amari Spievey agree to one-year contract

Amari Spievey has agreed to a one-year contract with the Lions.

According to a Detroit Free Press report, the Detroit Lions and safety Amari Spievey have agreed to a one-year contract.

As a restricted free agent, the Lions had the ability to tender Spievey to a one-year, $1.323 million contract, but the team declined to pursue that option. The terms of the agreement are currently unknown.

The Lions selected Spievey in the third round of the 2010 NFL draft out of Iowa. A cornerback in college, he was converted to safety during training camp of his rookie year.

In three seasons with the Lions, Spievey has played in 35 games, starting 26. He's made 142 tackles and intercepted five passes.

Spievey missed the majority of the 2012 season after sustaining a season-ending concussion in Week 7 against the Chicago Bears. It was his second concussion in as many seasons.

According to general manager Martin Mayhew, Spievey has been cleared for contact.

ugh! There goes the run defense again. Can we give him a nickname now like Amari "Bad Angle" Spievey?

I don't mind the speivey deal. He's not terrible and is capable depth, when he's healthy. They need someone worth a crap back there though. Delmas is fine, but they need good coverage guy.

Also would like jones if he comes cheap. He was simply a nickel rusher who didn't see much time in the field at all. He's good against the run and is a solid rusher. Not a wide 9 guy though as he doesn't have the speed. Abandon the w9 and sign jones to about $2M per. Make it incentive laden since he did have issues with knee swelling last year and actually went on IR because of it.

Lions keep Kassim Osgood
Posted by Michael David Smith on March 12, 2013, 4:43 PM EDT

Special teams coverage specialist Kassim Osgood is staying in Detroit.

Osgood, who has made three Pro Bowls as a special teamer, agreed to a new deal with the Lions today, a league source tells PFT.

Although he’s listed as a wide receiver, Osgood didn’t catch any passes last season and has rarely been more than a role player on offense at any point in his nine-year NFL career.

But what Osgood does well is play special teams, and that’s an area where the Lions need help. He’ll help them out in the kicking game for another year.

I wish we would dump this trash scheme. A traditional 4-3 would be just fine, and more fitting since Cliff is gone and all of the best free agent DEs aren't fit for it and the linebackers aren't very good.

Jason Jones only productive seasons came while playing under Jim Washburn's Wide-9 in Tennessee.

His knee issues really just crept up on him over the last 2 years. He's relied less on speed than he did when he first came into the league.

Also, his best 2 years in the wide 9 were a whopping 5 and 4 sacks. He looked better as a rusher in Seattle, in less playing time, IMO.
5, 4, 3.5, 3, 3
His sack totals from his rookie year to last year. Statistically not much change, even with the change in defensive scheme. He also started 13/14 games the year prior to leaving Tennessee, so his nickel rush only in Seattle was pretty damn good. Ether way, I stand by my comment

That's at DT FYI. 4-5 sacks at DT is top 10 sack numbers. He's not a big time player in normal defensive scheme's because he's small for the DT position, but in the wide-9 he excelled at stunts and twists with the DE to cause confusion for the offensive line. The whole reason the Lions are looking at him is because he's a wide-9 guy that had success with Washburn.

Redding had good sack numbers at DT and looked good at DE (the same way jones does). But, if you don't have the speed, you won't excel in the wide 9. This was obvious with kvb who didn't have the speed to get to the QB. I like jones, but with his recent knee issues, I don't hint he has the speed anymore to excel at DE in the wide 9. I think jones is a starter and could be a solid 8-9 sack guy, but I just don't agree that he can put up 10+ in the wide 9. 6-7, sure.

He is not a DE he is a DT. The Lions will use him as a DT, he has more than enough speed for the position and is the undersized penetrating style of DT that they like for the Wide-9.
