If this guy can translate to a NFL field with these skills, we won't miss a beat. This is a wait and see. Check out video ... iskQnL4wGE

Lions sign Norwegian kicker Havard Rugland

Norway YouTube Kicker AP

David Akers is going to have some competition for the kicking job in Detroit.

And it’s not just any competition. It’s “Kickalicious” competition.

Havard Rugland, the Norwegian newcomer to football who became a YouTube sensation thanks to a video named “Kickalicious” filled with stupendous kicking feats, has signed with the Lions. Tim Twentyman of the Lions website reported the news, but had no information about the terms of the deal.

Rugland worked with former NFL kicker Michael Husted to train for workouts with the Lions and other teams, including the Jets and Browns. Rugland first worked out for the Lions last month, but they held off on signing him as they sorted things out with Jason Hanson. Hanson retired, leaving the Lions to sign Akers after his rocky 2012 season.

The veteran has to be considered the favorite over a guy who has no prior football experience, but the idea of a guy earning a job in the NFL thanks in large part to a YouTube video feels like an almost too perfect statement of our time.

No way to really make a prediction but what I found interesting from his placekicks was that he doesnt seem to follow through with his kicking leg very well. Maybe he can get even more power or a higher trajectory with some coaching

I'm curious how he does when it matters. 1/2 of being a good kicker is being cool under pressure. How can he handle himself when it's the end of he game, we're down by one, and it all comes down to him?

I keep checking to see if this story was originally printed on 4/1 - but alas no. Will be a fun storyline to follow...

Crazy! Hard to say if this will totally translate to the NFL, but he has some amazing skill for sure.

Same Old Lions, just a different year....

Do we use him for PAT's and Kickoffs? Or as a punter? Seems like he could nail it inside the 5 yard line everytime.

Climate Change - happening every second, of every minute of every day ever since the world was created. Needless to say it's man's fault.

Id love to see what he could do with directional punting to the sidelines (way underused in the NFL since few punters have enough control) so you cant take players like Devin hester and other epic returnmen somewhat out of the game.

Mayhew mentioned in his press conference today that they worked him out earlier when they were still talking contract with Hanson and saw him as a developmental player. After Hanson retired and they signed Aikers, they wanted another left footed kicker so the holders weren't having to go back and forth.
