Detroit Lions notes and observations from OTAs: Reggie Bush returning punts

ALLEN PARK -- The Detroit Lions concluded their second day of organized team activities (OTAs) on Wednesday.

Here are some things you need to know about today's practice (as a reminder, training camp is when position battles occur, and alignments during OTAs do not necessarily indicate depth chart rankings):

-- Detroit's practice was not padded, and the team did not go full speed often on Wednesday. There were not a lot of 11-on-11 drills, which made the installation of plays, and teaching of fundamentals, the main goal.

-- Receiver Nate Burleson appears to be back at 100 percent after breaking his leg last October. He ran with the first team, and did not lose any quickness. Burleson also lost weight (198 pounds to 192) this offseason to add speed.

-- Guard Dylan Gandy took some first-team reps, and has a chance to replace Stephen Peterman in the starting lineup if he can beat out Larry Warford in training camp.

-- Detroit's Riley Reiff (left tackle) and Jason Fox (right tackle) received first-team reps on Wednesday. Even though Fox received first-team reps, he will likely share time with Corey Hilliard until the Lions decide which player earns that starting spot.

-- Lions receiver Calvin Johnson continues to treat even the lightest practices like a regular season game. Johnson laid out twice for passes, despite not wearing any pads.

-- During individual drills, two of Detroit's defensive lineman lined up next to each other. After the ball was snapped, the player on the left had to chase down his teammate on the right, and apply a tag. The drill is designed to increase initial quickness, while the distance was probably less than 20 feet. Ezekiel Ansah successfully ran down Ndamukong Suh, which prompted laughter from the defensive tackle.

-- Defensive tackle Nick Fairley's hand speed after the snap noticeably increased throughout practice. He also showed a lot of quickness off the ball.

-- It is too early to determine which player will return punts for Detroit this season, but running back Reggie Bush, receiver Terrence Austin, receiver Patrick Edwards, running back Steven Miller, receiver Cody Wilson and receiver Mike Thomas took turns on Wednesday.

-- Lions cornerback Chris Greenwood practiced after missing last season due to an abdominal injury. Greenwood's feet moved with ease, and he covered a lot of ground without overexerting himself.

-- With Lions safety Louis Delmas out of town rehabilitating, Don Carey took his reps. Other players to receive first-team reps were cornerback Ron Bartell, cornerback Bill Bentley, linebacker Travis Lewis, and Burleson.

-- The kickers participated in private drills indoors, so there was no way to tell how David Akers or Havad Rugland performed.

-- Punters Sam Martin and Blake Clingan had good days. They got distance and height on their punts, although, Martin seemed to have more hang time. Each player did shank at least one kick in practice.

-- Cornerback Chris Houston showed off his explosive speed when he broke up a pass intended for receiver Kris Durham.

-- Tight end Tony Scheffler found ways to get open in practice - as usual. Scheffler traditionally does not drop passes in practice, and that streak continued on Wednesday.

-- Lions OTAs are not open to the media again until next Wednesday (May 29).
